Question about HP SureStore DAT24x6 DAT Tape Drive

Open Question

Autoloader SCSI changer is not loading at system boot-startup

OS is Windows Server 2003 with Veritas BackUp Exec. I was successfully running backups on DLT Drive. Then I installed HP SureStore DAT24x6 external and I was able to function with both the dat drive and the library changer. Then while I was running some tests with configurations I suddenly lost the functionality of the scsi changer. I have checked everything and I about to uninstall everything relative to the drive and the software and start over. It appears that I may have inadvertantly deleted a driver or something and can't seem to resolve the issue.
The one item I can't find info on is the FB setting. When I recycle the drive, the self test shows the SCSI ID and the FB setting. I don't kknow what the FB setting is? However, the robotics of the changer functions independant of the software, so I am sure the libriary hardware is okay. Can anybody help with this?

SOURCE: forgot service password for HP Surestore Tape Autoloader 1/9 DLT

This legacy devices service password can be reseated by following this steps:

The following is required before resetting the password:

  1. Access to the front panel of the HP Surestore DLT library.
  2. From the Home screen, press Main.
  3. From Main, press Information.
  4. From Information, press More.
  5. From this menu, press Date and Time.
  6. Write down the date (including year) and time.

The display shows a valid date and time
Do the following:
  1. Press the left-most button (button 1). This button is not labeled. A warning message to call service will appear.
  2. Press OK.
  3. The Call Center must then calculate a special password based on the date and time, using the following formula:
    1. (Hours * 1001) + (Days * 101) + Month + Year (all 4 digits) = subtotal
    2. Multiply the subtotal by 123. If this multiplication results in a number greater than 99,999,999 (this should never happen), use the special password of 44122333.
    3. Since the only valid choices are 1-4 for each digit, follow these rules:
      • If the digit=0 (zero), make the digit=1
      • If the digit=9, then make digit=1
      • If the digit>4, subtract 4 from the digit
      • If the digit does not meet any of the above, leave the digit unchanged. If the result is less than 8 digits, add leading 1s to make it eight digits in length.
        NOTE: As an example, 2000 02/07 2:30 is displayed (February 7, 2000 at 2:30). Plugging in the numbers: (2 * 1001) + (7 * 101) + 2 + 2000 = 4711
        4711 * 123 = 59453
Convert all digits to be between 1 and 4 = 131413
Add the leading 1s to make it eight digits long - 11131413
  4. Enter this special code to the front panel.
  5. Press OK. The screen will confirm that the password has been reset.
  6. Set a new password.

Certance DAT 72 tape drive stopped communicating with PC

We have had the same problems with HP drives and Veritas. In our case it was not the drive per se. While I am assuming that based on the date of your post that you have moved to another solution, however, I will provide for you what we did.

First shut all down, disconnect the tape drive from the scsi cable, then restart. Go into computer management and turn all your backup exec services from auto to manual. Now go to devices and do a rescan. Once this is done and you see no tape drive whatsoever in the devices shut down the server. Reconnect the scsi cable to the drive and restart.

Go back into computer management, back to devices and rescan for hardware changes. Do you see it? If so, good! Sometimes a re-seating of connectors will do that. On the other hand, it could also be a tape driver from Veritas that just doesn't work (my case), take the original driver cd that came with the unit and start that loading up. Can you see it now? Can you use windows backup to access the tape drive? Now go into services and start the services individually. Go into backup exec and see if you can read your tape. Go back to services and reset all services back to auto. If you ever have to reinstall/upgrade backup exec, think twice about using their drivers.

How to allocate media with ntbackup

  1. Valueloader should have "SEQ" on front screen.
  2. Insert media into Valueloader

NTBackup will NOT see individual tapes, but treat the SDLT320 drive as a stand alone with one big tape, and the Valueloader will automatically change tape, in sequence, until the backup is done.

This is the major difference between a "Autoloader" (Sequential Mode) and a "Library" (Random Mode).

In Sequential Mode the robot (or Medium Changer) is hidden from the OS, thus only providing a tape drive. The autoloader is smart enough to see incoming data and will move Tape1 into the drive. As the media fills, the autoloader will swap media on it's own. By the time the backup is complete, whether it be one or all 8 pieces of media, Windows has no clue that it's data crossed multiple pieces of media.

In Random mode, the library is dumb and will do nothing on its own. It's told by software (i.e. Backup Exec, CommVault, etc.) when to move a tape into the drive and which tape to move!

The advantage of using Random Mode is that software runs the show and media is effeciently managed. Restores are much quicker as the exact tape a file is recorded on can be directly loaded and extracted, vs. (worst case in Seq. mode) having to go through each tape, in sequence, before getting to the file that could be on that last tape (think hours!).

Sun L25 Tape Library

what drives are inside as these units can come in several configs. For all SCSI units the Adaptec 29320 is good for fiber the qlogic cards are my prefered cards.

Drivers are available from sun for the library and drives although you can sometimes use the standard windows drivers for many drives. (search for LTO as the tape drive manufacturer in win drivers for LTO) Although best to use sun drivers if at all possible.

Library comes up as a medium changer in device manager.

What backup software are you using? If Backup exec then the latest version already comes with their drivers built in

hope this helps

DDS-5 not compatible with windows 2008

I am pretty sure that the driver should be compatible with win08.

If you are using backup exec then try switching to use symantec drivers for your tape drive (setting withing BUEX)

If it is just the tape that cant be read or identified and was backed up using windows backup then try restoring the backup on a 2003 server and then copying the data across the network.

Pc Freezes when attempting to access HP SSL-1016 Ultrium 460 Tape

I have to admit this is a tough one. You seem to have tried most things i would try 1st.

I would suggest trying to download an eval coy of another backup program such as backup exec 12.5 from the symantec website and trying that.

This enables you to eliminate the backup software from your enquiries and if you also enable BUEX to use its own drivers (rather than the standard windows drivers) then that is another thing eliminated. are pretty good near the Berkshire area if you need a field call to help sort the issue but i would try BUEX 1st as that will help diagnose the problem even if you dont wish to continue with their software

Quantum superloader not showing in windows device manager

First off, I have to say that I have had nightmares with Quantum tape libraries. It is possible that they are still manufacturing lemons. I had one replaced 4-times and it still did not work!

Start troubleshooting by making sure that it is identified by the controller card it is connected to. You should see this during the server POST before Windows starts. If you don't see it there then Windows definitely won't see it. Send it to Quantum for service.

If the controller sees it then make sure that you are using the Backup Exec drivers. Never use the manufacturer's drivers with Backup Exec. Veritas, now Symantec, has a downloadable utility called the Device Driver Installation Wizard that will make sure you have the correct driver loaded.

I hope this helps.

Tandberg LTO HH (LTO-3)

The error is because the driver isn't loaded for the device. Look up how to add the device in symantec help. If windows recognizes it already then usually you can go to devices and add teh device from within symantec.
