Question about Linksys Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Linksys~ During the installation process of the Epson printer installed on our home network system; there has been an unexplained operation performed by us that now has us locked out of our home network. We are using the initial password assign at the time of installation. The network will not accept this password & we are locked out of our home network on our wireless devices such as our I Pod & my laptop (which is wireless capable). I do not know how to reset the password, nor try to create a new network. Unfortunately we don't have the original installation disk. Can you pls assist? Thanks Rhett Kirby

Thanks for the reset button. Couple of questions. I understand that we many not need the disk to re-intall, can you give a ball park figure as too the cost of the downloads? In order to create a new network I can do that process through the Network & Sharing Center, correct? It is best to select to select a "private" network? Model # Linksys WRT54GS. Operating sys Vista.

    Thank You

Once the router is reset back to factory settings I will then need to re-establish the 2 computers, the printer, the laptop, & the ipod manually. Is that right? Are there instructions for that as well. We don't have any of the manuals for any of our computers. 2 Yrs old. Just didnt keep then. Pls advise.......

On the back of your Linksys router there is a reset button. Press this for 10 seconds. This will reset your router back to the factory default state as it was when it first came out of the box. The password for the router will be reset as well. You do not mention what your model number is but the majority of the Linksys routers come with no default password. You can then set it to whatever you choose to use. You will then have to setup your network again. You should be able to setup the network without having to install any extra software. However, if there was anything in particular that you needed from the install cd you can download the files from the Linksys site. Choose the Support item at the top of the page. You will then be given a page with a box that you can fill with either the model number or serial number of your router. The site will then direct you to the models main page. There you can find all of the software as well as copies of the manual. Hope all goes well for you. Here is the URL for their Support page =>

If a blank password doesn't work you can try admin as the password.

  • bvanjoff Jul 18, 2009

On the bottom of your router will be a black & white sticker. It will have your model number followed by ver.#? What is the number after ver? Also you do not have to pay to download the manual or any of the software for the router.

  • bvanjoff Jul 18, 2009

Yes you will be using the Network & Sharing center. Or you can use your Help & Support center in Vista and do a search for Setting up a wireless network. Vista have a built in helper that will make it a lot easier to setup your network. It will also advise you of the best way to setup your network. You shouldn't need to have your computer's manuals to setup the network.

As far as setting up your computers, printers, and Ipods; If you have your router manual handy use it in conjunction with your Vista instructions for setting up your hardware. I've never setup a network for an iPod, but if you're not sure how to do it there should be help on the Apple site. You should be able to get everything up and running without a problem by following Vista's instructions as well as the manual for the router.

I apologize for the delay in answering your last question. It's been a rather busy weekend. Once you do the reset it will wipe out all of the settings that you had added to your router. Most routers allow you to backup your settings to your hard drive to make restoring your network easier. Unfortunately this feature is not built into your router. However, the setup for wireless networks that is built into the Windows operating systems will make things a lot easier when you are reestablishing your network. If your not familiar with the process of adding any computers to your network that are not wireless you can do a search in Windows Help & Support for home network. Both XP & Vista have built in wizards that will make it very easy to add these computers to your routers network. Follow the instructions in the Router manual for the initial router setup. It will make the connection to your Internet connection. Then just follow the manual for setting up your DHCP server. This is the feature that allows the router to give out IP addresses automatically to any item that is a part of your network. The setup for any wireless items is relatively simple as well. Wireless items will either automatically search for wireless networks and then ask you of you want to join them. Or they allow you to manually enter the settings into the router. I haven't ever added an iPod to a network, but I've taken a quick look at some manuals. You would go to Settings and then WiFi Settings. The iPod then looks for wireless networks and asks if you want to join them. It will ask you for the networks password, then choose Join.

This info should help you to get your network back up and running. Of course if you do run into any other problems please don't hesitate to let me know.

How do I connect a laptop to my hp 2575

I would recommend using the built in networking. You can connect your printer to the network, then use the install disk to install it. During the install wizard, make sure to select the option for the networked (TCP/IP) connected printer. You will install the printer seperately on each machine. Alternativly, you can install the printer on one machine and share it across the network. There is a button on the Sharing tab to install additional Drivers. You use this button to install the driver for the other operating system. I hope this helps. Let me know if you need more information.

I have an Epson Stylus Photo R220 Printer connected to a linksys print server, but

Well, The first thing you should do is to try to test of the print server is properly connecting to the printer. Check the linksys printserver manual and look for how to print a status sheel from the print server. Once done, get the IP address of the print server. Go to your laptop and navigate to control panel/printer. See if you have the driver installed or download the Vista Drivers from During the installation, it will ask you what connection type your computer uses. cancel out of the installation or choose LPT1 as the port. Once done, go back to control panel/printers.Right click the R220 icon and navigate to properties. Select ports after that and add a new port. Select Standard TCP IP port after that. Once done, the wizard will appear. Input the IP address of the printer and finish the wizard. you should be good to go after this.
