When typing, random characters appear smudged, too light, and with black lines on either side, almost like brackets. I installed a brand new ribbon hoping it would resolve the issue but it continues to happen. It does not happen with every letter I type, but the issue persists. The characters will appear like [a] but light, smudged, squished, and practically illegible.

Probably the plastic cap on the print soleniod is broken. They are available from us for 15.00 but a little tricky to install.

Hi:
It appears that the ribbon feed connector has come loose from the ribbon feed motor. On top where the ribbon sits you will see where the ribbon couples to the ribbon feed motor on the right side. Look on the bottom of the ribbon and you will see where the ribbon couples with the ribbon deck feed motor. Directly under that ribbon deck is the ribbon feed motor. It sound like the cable came loose and it just needs to be plugged back into to motor.
Good Luck
Andrew
Put in a mulit part form, if it prints on the copies the ribbon isn't lifting, if it dosen't the plastic cap on the print solenoid needs replaced.

SOURCE: IBM Correcting Selectric II; correction ribbon frozen in front of typing ribbon.
Move the grey lever on the R. side of the carrier to the R. and remove correction tape, try the machine, if it seems to work OK install a new correction tape.

Try typing on a mulipart form. If it types on the copies and not the orinonal the ribbon is the problem. If it dosen't type on the copies then the plastic cap on the print solenoid is broken.
We sell the cap with installation instructions for 20.00 includes shipping.
