I HAVE A 1996 JOHNSON 15 HP MOTOR. Bought new gas tank and on the the third tank the primer bulb went flat and the motor died. Then would slowly pump back up. Tried again and same problem occured at full speed. A little later ran ok. Vent was open and even loosened fuel tank cap. The primer bulb does not want to pump up quickly

My thought was that the fuel pump works good and the filter in not plugged, that there was dirt in the line or the check valve at the bulb was sticking shut or the inside of the line is being eaten up from fuel causing restriction.

I bought a new fuel tank for my 1997 15hp johnson last year. After filling my third tank the motor was running great but then the engine lost rpm's and died. The primer bulb was colasped flat. The vent on the tank was open and I tried to lossen the cap. The primer bulb came back but was slow to pump up. Motor did the same thing again moments later. When the bulb was to its normal shape the motor ran ok. It was ok the rest of the day. What could have caused this?

I would get a new primer bulb. I have had a similar problem on my outboard and the primer bulb was causing the problem. The bulbs will go bad and I have even purchased a new one that was bad and had to be exchanged. I would be interested to know if that was the problem. Hope this helped. Good luck and good fishing!!

The primer bulb is only used to pump fuel at startup, if the motor died at full speed this is not the primer bulb. By the way a clogged fuel hose, or dirt inside the primer can cause troubles at any stage.
You can replace the fuel line from tank, just in case.

Just ensure that the problem does not occurr because of air being sucked on the lines, this is a common problem on outboard motors and it is difficult to sort out. When it is air bein sucked into lines you usually get smoke before the motor turns off.
If that happens at full speed it is probably a clogged fuel pump.
Unplug the two small pipes connected to the fuel pump and blow them with a compressor check if something can obstruct the fuel pump.

If there is a fuel filter (it looks like a plastic cylinder on fuel lines) remove it and replace it.

If still no luck then you can check fuel pressure on the lines to find out where the problem is, and also clean the carburetor.
To read fuel pressure use a tool like this:

Actron CP7802 Vacuum and Fuel Pressure Tester .

You can get more parts and diagrams for your motor here.

Please do not forget to leave feedback on the solution.

Thanks.

I told you, replace the fuel cable with primer bulb first, or test using a different fuel tank (borrow one).

if that does not fix the problem check pressure on fuel line using a gauge.

I won't be able to add any more comments, sorry you gave a bad rating.

    Bye.

Problems getting gas from gas tank to my outboard 15 HP 4 stroke Mercury.

need to clarify your statements
you say-- have replaced flexible lines from the tank to the engine --replaced the primer bulb
well that is all the rubber hoses from the tank to the pump on the engine
Then you further state only parts not replaced are the connections between the
gas tank and the motor and the tank itself
Well that connection is the rubber hoses that you stated were already replaced
So this may help rubber in outboard motors rots internally so replace all rubber from the tank to the motor, overhaul the fuel pump on the motor and all the rubber hoses from the pump to the carby/s
the primer bulb will not pump fuel if the tank vent is not open so that is one reason you feel like it is pumping air when priming
best advice is --no e-mix fuels to used on out board engines

I have a 1961 18 hp johnson that i replaced the fuel pump and fuel lines new primer bulb but seems to run the gas out of the fuel line and not geting more gas from the tank in less i sqese the bulb

There has to be a vacuum leak in your system some where. If you lose vacuum there will be no fuel flow. Check all connections and gaskets as well. There has to be air getting in somewhere. i had a new primer bulb that had an air leak and had to take it back. all it takes is a pin hole you can not see.

Fuel line could be sucking air.check breather not blocked on fuel tank.if fuel bulb sucks flat, means blockage btwn bulb and tank.have you tried priming motor while running at full throttle.could also be dirty carb

On these types of motors that could be the problem, another thing to check is the primer bulb. I have had a primer bulb that had a small crack in it which went undetected for a while. These types of motors do not have a fuel pump and they work on a siphon type mechanism, if there is an air leak dealing with the gas tank anywhere, that is your problem.

40 Hp Johnson outboard motors stalls out after a few minutes running then takes forever to start again

May likely be one of two problems:

1. Fuel flow: Make sure fuel tank vent is open and not blocked while engine running. Check primer bulb is working and no air leaks along hose anywhere. Check function of fuel pump and ensure fuel is getting to the cylinders.

2. Overheating: Check engine isn't overheating and that water pump is operating properly while engine is running.

1974 Johnson 70 hp outboard, quits on acceleration.

It sounds like your motor is starving for fuel. At an idle, you have adequate flow to keep the engine running. When you call for more fuel...you sputter and quit. Could be a clogged filter or trash in the line or in a jet. Yes you will have some air in the bulb, but not a great deal. You could be sucking air at a hose connection (loosing some prime)...try this, start the engine and slowly accererate, have someone pump the bulb as you accelerate, see if the engine works properly while doing this test.

If you have a primer bulb and the motor "recovers" after a near stall with a pump of the bulb, then you have to replace your fuel pump. Johnsons do have this problem often. Otherwise it could be the high speed jets although it sounds like you checked the carb good. Also if you have a primer bulb, Replace everything from the tank to the engine. Costs about $14 at Wal Mart, $55 at a boat place.
