Question about IBM ThinkPad 600X Notebook

2 Answers

I want to boost the performance of my Thinkpad 600X whose motherboard nas been declared irrecoverably dead. So, what motherboard do I buy? And, what other essential components do I need, the dishonest technicians having emptied it of key items, e.g,the hard drive? Where do I get these along with software and user's manual, a battery a high-performance DVD drive a charger as well as a charger. The Thinkpad is of the 2002 vintage and I got it second hand, problems starting immediately. I needed to place a weight on the power socket for current to go in and even then only the battery suppled current the unit going into hibernation when the battery was down. The battery could recharge only with the laptop off. As for the DVD drive, it recognizes hardly any DVD. So, what I want is being able to transform this laptop into one with a performance above what it came out of the factory with. Genlemen, your help will be most highlt appreciated. Thanks in advance

I would advise you to get a new pc, because if u check the cost of buying all these things u would end up loosing since most of the vital parts are missing. a new one would cost lesser than 700 dolars at most why not get one. new pc with warranty, make sure its a duo core or centrino dats the best and are fast at least 1 gb ram, 120 hdd and the processor duo core centrino or any pentium, d, m, 4 etc

You cant do anything except throw it away and get a new one. that is an old obsolete computer. just get a more recent one like a t 40 or something. it can only be upgraded so much but it would not be enoughj to help.

How to fix IBM 600x very slow

Sorry, but this machine has seen better days. At 500MHz it just can't handle today's robust media rich web sites and programs. Plus all those optimizer's slow it down as well.

For example I have a 2.66GHz that's 5X's faster and its about ten yrs old. I would purchase a new one in a second, if I had the money.

Happy Shopping!

cmos cell is round cell on motherboard. For that open back cover of laptop then you can see motherboard chip set pull cmos cell from motherboard you can reset cmos bios settings with it you can also set jumper it's near cmos cell it has 3 pins 1-2-3 put jumper in 2-3 position then power up then all settings defaults. then again put it in 1-2 position.then check. My thinkpad 600x boots but has no OS and it has two errors: one about the battery: error 173 and one about the internal clock: error 163 what can i do to fix this?

It needs a new motherboard battery, usually a CR2032.

Probably accessed via removing a plate of the bottom or the keyboard, best to consult your user manual first.

A universal charger is easy to find, but I do know that model uses a 16v AC adapter which can be found at any store that sells electronics (Best Buy, etc)

Black Screen at boot up

May be the CMOS battery you replaced is not compatible or firmly placed.
Check if you can enter in BIOS and change setting for Power option.
Generally, F2 , ESC or DEL key used to get in BIOS.
Also you may try Tapping F8 key during startup of PC to get in Safe Mode, and then Check for Event viewer entries if any red cross entries and error found in System and Application.

IBM thinkpad 600x

The battery that might be dead is not the main battery. It's the cmos battery, which is a coin cell battery located on the motherborad. It stores the setting in the bios and keeps the date and time accurate. Errors 161 and 163 mean the date and time are wrong. If the cmos battery is dead then, the date and time go back to 1/1/2000 every time the pc is restarted. Thus, you get the "wrong date and time" errors 161 and 163.
