My D40 has the EXACT same problems, and the shutter is not releasing at all. I've doublechecked every aspect: original lens that came with the camera, is set on A not M, battery charged, SD card empty... one day it just stopped working. I've been reading around on this site, and it sadly looks like this is pretty common? What a design flaw!

My camera is 4 months old and today my auto focus stopped working. It won't take a picture. It works in manuel but when I push the button with the auto focus it sounds stuck or hung up.

Makes a kind little whine and then nothing. I take great care of my D40X. My battery is fully charged and it has never had the lens changed.

Sounds like you need to get your camera fixed by Nikon.

However, you say the auto focus stopped working, you didn't switch to a lens that uses a mechanical focus linkage do you? The D40 only supports lenses with AF-S or AF-I type autofocus drives. AF-D and AF-G types without AF-S or AF-I don't autofocus.

Also, check that the A/M switch on the lens is in the correct position.

Manual focusing is quite difficult to do accurately with an AF camera. The screen inside the camera is not optimized for this. If you are sure you are focusing accurately but the pictures you take are still out of focus, the mirror may need adjusting. I can provide further info on this if you require, but if you're within warranty, i'd recommend that route first.

HOW DO I SET MY CAMERA TO AUTO FOCUS

The D90 has three different autofocus modes. In the AF-S mode it will not shoot until it has focused. In the AF-C mode it will shoot when you press the shutter release button even if has not focused. In the AF-A mode the camera switches between the AF-S and AF-C modes so either can apply. Also, bear in mind that the camera doesn't really know what you're taking a picture of. It may focus on something other than your subject. If you're in the single-area AF mode then you control which of the eleven focus points the camera uses. In any of the dynamic-area AF modes the camera decides. For full details on how the various modes work, please consult your manual. You might also check out the Nikon D90 video tutorial.

Getting Better Pictures From Your Nikon D90

I'm a professional PGA Photographer out here on the West Coast. I've been photographing for over 40 years. A few years ago, I bought a Nikon D90, after over 50,000 photos, I've came up with the conclusion that Manual Focus and Manual Shooting is the best. Program, A, S, Landscape, are all good, but, they are not consistence all the time. The same with Auto Focus, I can not tell you how many times I'd line up a photo of a Pro Golfer and my Auto Focus moves in and out of focus, and I miss the shot. So, now I use the Auto Focus to start and as soon as it's sharp, I reach over and turn my lever back to Manual for the shot and any refinement focus as well. Manual exposure is needed as well, as the Program modes will not be consistence from shot to shot. I meter the subject, take a test shot and change my setting manually. That way the exposure is the same. Hope this helps

Auto Focus not working for Canon EFS 18-55mm lens

This usually happens when the contacts between the lens and the camera are dirty. Try taking the lens off and cleaning carefully the metal contacts on the camera and the lens. If that does not solve the problem, you can get a warranty repair or replacement since that camera should still be under the original 12 month warranty.

Nikon d40 not working and focusing

I have similar problem on my D40. I think there is something mechanical with the camera's shutter button, some connections, I guess... The only solution I've found is to go to Menu > Custom Settings Menu > "AE-L/AF-L" and set to "AF". Now you can focus by AF-L button. Focusing works then perfectly. The WORST thing is that I can't lock exposure now and that's sad :( Maybe I can try to fix this in the camera center later, we'll see. But it takes months in Ukraine to do the fixing... Hate that!

I can't get the flash to work.

The accessory shoe above the flash has a switch under the plate which detects when an external flash is attached. If that switch has become obstructed by dirt the camera will not fire the built in flash. Check it is free from dirt or corrosion, apart from that, the only other cause will be the flash tube itself is faulty and needs to be replaced. The user manuals for Canon cameras are usually fairly thorough but if you require further assistance your local photo store should be able to direct you to some helpful workshops to help get the most out of your product.

Auto focus quit working

Did it get dropped when the camera was open? If so it could have made the lens pop out more on one side. I'm not sure how to really explain it. When you open the camera, the thing that comes out might be off track I guess you could say. What setting are you using it on?
