Gaggenau fryer won't heat

By Vince2 on Nov 19, 2007

this is a built into kitchen counter deep fryer. after a power outage and surge the fryer developed a blinking "0" on the digital display. owner manual does not mention this so it does not seem to be a code. The timer and thermostat controls don't work and the unit won't heat up.

Gaggenau model # VF230-610

I bought a new power supply module which switches on the heating element. No change.

the 240 v 2300 watt heating element reads 23 ohms with a multimeter check. so I don't think it is the element.

the only other components are the digital display and two rotating mechanical switches that control the timer and thermostat.

What do you think? I think the next step is to change the digital display? Does anyone have any ideas?

- Forgot to mention I did check the voltage going to the fryer with the multimeter and it was about 240v.

Also there is no reset button or in line or fuse as far as I can tell. None is mentioned in the owner's manual.

There is a circuit board with transistor, capacitors etc. that is part of the power supply board that I replaced. There is no physical damage visible anywhere on the old board. Testing those individual parts is beyond my abilities. Replacing the whole board didn't fix it.

There is a bit more circuitry on the digital display board.

Thanks for your help so far.

- Thanks for the response.

I bought a new power supply board on line. I figured the power supply would most likely take the brunt of the power surge.

When it arrived I took out the old one and put in the new. No change...still blinking "0" and unit wouldn't work.

So I guess the next step is to replace the digital display part which also has some electronic circuitry on it.

Other than the heating element there is no other electronic part to replace. These parts are expensive and hard to get. Was hoping to find some one who has worked on this brand of fryer. It's a great fryer and we want to get it working again.

Could't find a local repair person to come and look at it. The dealer doesn't fix them.

check to see if there is some kind of breaker on the unit, it should be like a reset button. some kind of safety switch has tripped, you need to find out what and where it is.

you mentioned of power outage and surge, it might have overstressed some components on the digital display circuitry! check for the circuit for the display! see if you have some components to check if the developed open/short connections (Transistors, diodes, capacitors!)

Note: the fryer was rated at 220-240 volts, at power surge the supply could reach up to 250 volts or higher which generally give bad effects to major appliances (TV, computers, radio, etc.)
check your voltage output of your outlets and see if it is within 220 to 240. the lower than 240 the better. during the day supply voltage tends to be higher and sometime much higher than 240 volts, this gives higher tendencies of appliance damages.
during the nigth it lowers due to consumer need!

voltage surges often causes over-stressing to electronic component especially when there poor voltage suppression design. ones commonly affected are transistors, capacitors and ICs.

there is a great possibility that your fryers circuitry was damaged!

hope this helps you!

- basing only with visible physical characteristics of electronics can't guarantee you they are of good condition! since you said that it is an old board, where did you get it from?

- perhaps it is the only one left unchanged ( the little bit circuit!) the power circuit board might have taken the surge and the display circuit did not! take your chance, replace it if you wish to! sometime we learn trough discovery!!!!
