There have been problems plaguing the LaCie external harddrives, for quite some time now.

The issue directly relates to the interface, inside the external enclosure. I don't know if you are acquainted with harddrive designs, or the interface that they plug into. If you are, disregard the following.

This is an average example of an IDE harddrive, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hard_drive-en.svg
Looking at this illustration, note where it points to -> IDE Connector. The illustration isn't very good, but those dots are metal pins.
The connection inside your external harddrive,
that connects to the harddrive itself, is called an Interface. This is a plug that has socket holes, to match those metal pins.

Now we go a little deeper. There are two types of harddrives. One is an IDE harddrive, the other type is a SATA harddrive. Your LaCie
will have a SATA harddrive inside.
Instead of the 40 pins that an IDE harddrive has, the interface for a SATA harddrive has 7.
(It has 15 pins for the power connection)

Now my solution:
Should you wish to save data that is on your LaCie external harddrive right now, I suggest you buy an external enclosure, (SATA), take out the hardrdive thats in your LaCie, and install it in the enclosure.

Since, the dimensions of the, LaCie design by Porsche 160GB external harddrive are:
Height -> 1.4 inches, (About 1-1/2 inches)
Width -> 4.4 inches, (About 4-1/2 inches)
Length -> 7.4 inches, (About 7-1/2 inches),
I'm willing to bet the harddrive inside is a desktop harddrive size. (3.5 inches across in width)

These are examples of 3.5 inch SATA external enclosures,
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=2780&name=3.5-eSATA-enclosure&Nav=|c:2778|&Sort=0&Recs=10
(A $25 or $35 unit will work just fine)

Try connecting it to another computer if that doesn't work try wiggling it gently and putting it in and out. Thumb drives are made cheaply and are not always dependable. Always get different types and keep back ups.

Archos 2 OC won't charge and is not recognised by laptop

Sometimes with mp3 players the cable is the one that is mostly damaged. Try replacing this cable and try again. It actually has happened to me on two different mp3 players. Cables are always faulty.

My WD element extrenal hard drive won't open. i can see it in my devices, and the blue light stays on. it also makes the sound saying it's connected but I can't see the device in my comput

First thing, try to change the cable, try a different one, then if it does not work, try to connect the hard drive on another computer, and changing cables as well. This will help you to narrow down the problem to find out exactly what the matter is. If the Hard drive spins properly and it does not produce any click-click sound then it is fine. If all the above fail, then you have to slave the hard drive using its internal SATA connection. You have to open up the hard drive and remove the pin that connects the hard drive to the cable. This will enable you to see the SATA connection. Slave the Hard drive on a desktop computer and see if you can gain access to it. If you can, then consider replacing both the cable and the pin that connects the cable to the hard drive. If your hard drive just spins and you can not access it while its a slave to another computer, then the hard drive has a problem.... Try the methods above, i believe your hard drive did not go this bad...

Hi, I'm trying to download photos from my G12 to my PC, but the computer doesn't recognise the camera. It's always worked fine before, so I've tried a card reader, a different USB socket...

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program, such as Windows Photo Gallery or Picasa ( http://picasa.google.com ).

Why wont my dvd recognize my hard drive, when i plug it in the dvd saya no usb

Try using a different USB cable. When cables are flexed a lot, they tend to wear out. Sometimes, the hard drive is unable to receive the necessary power to run properly.

When u put a dvd in it shows coloured,but regular tv channels shows black and white

Most likely the cable between the cable/satellite box and the tv is not fully home. Push all the connections firmly home and try it again.

I get a flashing light, amber/orange and a clicking sound thats in sync with it. I cannot access any data from the hard drive and it doesn't seem to be recognized on the pc.

The Passport has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the Passport, at minimal cost to you.

Unless there is something really weird about this drive it should work. I'm running W7 and have tried numerous hard drives and memory sticks and all have been recognised. W7 can be very slow sometimes in recognising disk drives. Try plugging it into a different USB port.

IPod won´t sync

Could be a loose hard drive connection cable on the inside. Could also be some corrosion on the USB connection. Try a different cable. Put your ear to the back and listen for clicking noises from the iPod - if you hear it you might have a warranty issue with a bad HDD. Attempt a restore. Worst case, try to get it evaluated by a technician - do not try to open an iPod Classic yourself- you will most likely cause permanent damage.
