It thinks the tray is open. Try to reopen and close the tray. If it still says open, help it close with a finger. Don't force it enough to break the gears.

Portable DVD player won't recognize door is closed.

My guess would be that the switch inside that the tray hits to tell the dvd player it's closed is broken.

WHY MY PORTABLE DVD WON'T PLAY

It won't play for one of two reasons:
1. There is something inside the DVD player, which keeps it from playing.
2. The DVD player's battery has run out of juice and can no longer play, meaning the player needs to be replaced.

Portable dvd player broken

You can get a cdrom cleaner kit and try that which may work. If that doesn't work you're stuck replacing it as the repair would cost more than the unit.

Says no disk

With the power turned off, open the DVD Player, and then open the top where you load the DVD into the player. Locate the laser lens and notice that the laser is attached to a transport assembly that moves the laser diagonally outward in a slot. 1. Slide this assembly outward to the end of its track. 2. Slide the assembly back inward to the closest inward position. 3. Repeat the process of sliding the assembly outward and then back inward.4. Put in a music CD and let it play all the way through. This helps to calibrate the laser head assembly movement. When the music CD is finished playing. 5. Put in a DVD, and you should have a working unit again This is a factory solution from Mintek that was given to a customer who ask for help with the forever loading disc problems. This solution may work on other models of portable DVD players. Most portable DVD players use this type of transport mechanism. Try this solution it might work for you. I hope this information helps you with your problem.

Wrong disc

With the power off... I opened the dvd player lid and slowly pushed the laser head away from the center until it was under the outside edge with only the edge of it visible to you. Then with a finger nail pull it back out about half way to the middle of the opening. Put the DVD back in the player and turn it back on. not sure if I just got lucky or not, but it fired up then!

Philips Portable DVD PET708

Try a laser cleaner.

Failing that, could be laser tracking problem due to hardened grease on the laser mounts.

Disconnect power and switch off.

Open disc lid.

With a clean finger, gently push the laser mechanism to it's outermost position furthest from the centre.

This will re-distribute any grease on the laser mounting.
