Acer's wireless network cards are usually very proprietary and can be a hard task to get them to work with a new OS. You may want to find a good PCMCIA card to insert into the side of your laptop. thay are usually pretty inexpensive. Also, check Acer's website to see if there is an updated driver or one that lists compatable with WinXP.

Try right-clicking on My Computer, go to Manage, then go into Device Manager. Inside Device Manager's list, do you see any devices with a yellow exclamation point? If not, expand the "Network adapters" section and see what's listed. It's possible that there is no wireless adapter in that laptop (unless you're sure there is one). Another possibility is that the wireless adapter is there, but not functional, faulty, or just plain broken. If the device is there and working, it should show up in Device Manager as an installed device; if it's there, but not working, it'll show up with an exclamation point. If it's not in the list at all, it's probably broken or the laptop doesn't have a wireless card.
