We have a GE Model GXSF27E01 water softener. It ran out of salt, so we unplugged it until we could get some salt. When we filled the salt container and plugged it back in, it failed to power up. The transformer is putting out the proper power, but the display is blank and doesn't seem to be working at all. Any ideas?

Try looking on the computer board for a battery back up. If it does have one, unplug that and then plug it back in and see if that will reset your control.

No salt is being used. What could be a problem?

The meter in the softener head is stuck. Hopefully your manual will at the least diagram where this is so you can take it apart and clean it. It 's also possible that the cord that connects your microprocessor to the valve body (where the meter is) has come loose. If you need more help your manual may give a phone number or you can go to wqa.org and find your local Certified Water Specialist.

What could be the problem

Still to regenerate the cells the system needs salt. So please contact your dealer, to ask what you should do to solve this problem. Perhaps they know if the salt is also regenerated or is flushed away. If it i flushed away, you need to fill the system so now and then.

Water softener fills up with water

If you are referring to the salt tank filling with water, then the problem is the eductor assembly. This is where the brine is drawn from the salt tank. If it is plugged no brine or very little brine will be drawn during regeneration. You will need to clean the eductor assembly and manually regenerate the softener to regain softened water.
What model softener is it? It would help to bail most of the water out of the salt tank. How much depends on the model.

I don't have a problem, just a question. I recently purchased a home with a GE Smartwater softening system installed Model GXSF23Z01. What do I need to do to maintain this system. Does it require salt?...

Check the time of day, and make sure it's accuate. Reset if necessary. Add salt if it's low. It's always best to let the salt level run low (about 1-2") so it doesn't mush. Only add 80-100 lbs at a time for best results. This particular softener doesn't keep a water level in the tank, so you won't see any water in the salt area. If there is standing water in the salt area, that could mean it's not working the way it should. Here is a link to the owners manual. It's in PDF format

What is it doing? No soft water? What is the water analysis? Try manually regenerating 2x in same day. Make sure a bypass valve is NOT open. I need more info to help.

My dishwasher says that it needs salt what sort of salt and how much?

HOW MUCH SALT DO I NEED TO ADD?

shim.gif
shim.gifYour machine may have a float indicator or a warning light to tell you when salt needs adding to the water softener. Often float indicators are difficult to see, and there is no accurate guide as to how much salt you need to add. Quite simply, just add granular salt to the reservoir until it won't take any more!

The softener will use the salt to replenish itself each time you wash. As an approximate guide, you should do a full top up about once a month. If your machine doesn't have a warning light, a good way to remember to check and / or top up is to do it on a regular day of the month (e.g. the first Saturday or the 15th)

CAN I USE ORDINARY TABLE SALT?

No. Table, cooking, rock and sea salts may contain additives that can actually increase water hardness. Also, the fine consistency of some of these salts mean they are likely to clog when wet. Always use granular dishwasher salt because it is very pure and is the right consistency for use in your machine.

Granular salt is the ONLY type of salt that should be used to regenerate the softener. Be aware that some varieties of 'dishwasher salt' use Dead Sea salt. This variety may contain minute insoluble organic matter that may adversely affect the resin within your softener over time. If you are in doubt about the origins of the salt, ask the retailer or manufacturer.

GE models in the Medle East (problem with heater and salt)

Cold is probably more efficient unless you have solar heating or your how water cylinder is right next to the washer with minimum amount of piping otherwise by the time the hot water reaches the machine it will have enough in it anyway :p I dont have much experience with water hardness issues as water in my region is quite soft but you can get tablets containing? softener as well as detergent... yes?

Ran out of salt refilled and it is not softening

Don't you get it? Salt is required for the softener to work. Pepper is not a replacement.

I am not familiar with your specific model of softener, but generally speaking, adding water to the brine tank is the last step of the regeneration process. This way the water can soak the salt until the next regeneration is called. Then, as you have determined, the valve does reverse direction and draws the brine solution through the resin.
There are other steps involved in regeneration, like back-washing and packing the resin, but you are mostly correct.

Hope this helps,
Kermit

Salt for DDW1805 Danby

I use ordinary household water softener salt crystals, not pellets, or table salt. The table salt often is not as refined as softener crystals, and can damage the dishwasher's softener in time. Also, the water softener salt comes in a large bag (around 25-50 lbs) for about $6 US.
