Question about Air Tools & Compressors

2 Answers

New Husky 4 gallon,1.5 horsepower air compressor. Worked fine first time. Several days later, tried to use it again and it doesn't turn on. Power on light indicates it is on, but motor doesn't run. Electrical outlet has normal voltage. Is there a simple fix or should I just return it?

Thanks: I had checked the pressure in the tank and it was "0".

  • gorryjohn Jul 19, 2009

Thanks for the help. I did indeed have zero pressure, vented the drains, etc., still no response. I tried tapping the pressure switch area, etc., but no response.
Luckily, it was under guarantee and I gave up trying to fix it and returned it.

The compressor motor is controlled by a pressure switch. The air pressure has to drop below the set value before it turns back on. What is the pressure on your gauge reading? May try tapping on the switch with a screw driver, maybe stuck

If the pressure is at zero, it should come on. The pressure switch needs a 'tap' and maybe an adjustment. It should be adjusted ok from factory though. Turn power off and check the pressure switch. pop them open and closed with a screw driver.
Make sure incoming power is okay too....

More info please, but first try, bleed out any press and see if it will come on then, may have enough press to keep motor off.

There should be a reset button on the motor. Try that first. Otherwise, it is a bad pressure switch or internal motor problem. If resetting the motor allows the unit to start, but it just hums, shut it off right away, bleed off all pressure and try again. Let us know what happens.

Sand Blaster: air shot out of water trap.

1. do you have an adequate air compressor, meaning can deliver sufficient air supply to the sand blaster. 2. if you have an air leak at the water trap at the bottom of the trap it self. you need a new one. 3. it is a must to have a water trap when using a sand blaster.
So what I would do is replace the water trap and install the new water trap at the compressor between the compressor and the air hose coupling. the reason for this is your less likely to have it fail at the compressor VS at the sand blaster. once you have done that. you need to make sure that you have no more than 3/4 of media / sand in the sand blaster itself.
then open air supply valve #1 where the water trap is or was a 1/4 -1/2 way. then open the mid way valve#2 1/4 - 3/4 way. and the bottom valve#3 open 1/4 - 3/4 way. getting the air supply valves all set correctly is hard to do some times.

Air valve #1 supplys the air to the blaster.( more air the better)
Air valve #2 supplys the air going into the top of the blaster tank. ( wich pressurizes the top of the tank to push the sand or media downward )
Air valve #3 supplys the air mixture to sand at the bottom of the tank.

I have a husky compressor, model number y6010-wk. it builds pressure slow, and shuts down right away.

Problem: My compressor is not producing the air that it once did. It takes twice as long to pump up.
Solution:
1)Turn off your compressor or disconnect the power.
2)Remove the connector tube that sends air to the tank.
3)Remove the head bolts on top of the pump.
4)Remove the head off of your pump.
5)Remove the valve plate off of your pump. It may be a one piece or a 2 piece design.
6)Inspect the valve plate for broken reed valves or broken gaskets above or below the valve plate.

Air Compressor question

No, When an air compressor is built, it requires a motor or engine to power the process of producing air. The horsepower is not the only component of the equation. It has to be combined with the compressor pump that it runs to produce the air needed. The bigger the horsepower does not necessarily mean more air. Remember to keep your required cfm in mind. Horsepower does not make you work more efficiently, but horsepower working in unison with a quality pump that produces enough cfm for your needs. Make sure when shopping that you look for the running horsepower and not the peak horsepower you get at startup. Some manufacturers have falsely advertised or implied the peak horsepower to be the normal run horsepower. At start-up, there is a surge of power needed to start the motor and can be 1.5-3 times the amount of running power needed. This means the horsepower need for the motor peaks as well, but then drops back down to normal. Many of these manufacturers are involved in a class-action lawsuit for misrepresentation. They have used man’s machismo of “the more horsepower, the better” to their advantage to make sales. These aren’t cars we’re talking about!
