Question about Porter Cable 14.4V Hamm Drill Kit

1 Answer

My chuck would not rotate,(Porter cable 14.4V Hamm drill) but the motor would turn as normal as I pressed the switch. There was a grinding noise as the motor turned which I first heard when I attempted to hold the chuck while cinching up a drill bit. There was nearly no torque at all on the chuck, considerably less than what may be available on the '1' setting. I switched from high to low and all is now fine on both high and low. Torque settings now work Hammer now works. What happened? Should I be looking for a new drill, or maybe a new gearbox?

It sounds like you were between gears. When you are in neither low or high, you are sort of in neutral. Normally it isn't a big deal. It happens to me occasionally, and I do what you did. You should be OK.

How do I change the bit on my porter-cable 18v drill? Where/how do I line up the black dial with the silver dial to release the bit??

I just looked at some illustrations on ebay of Porter-cable 18 volt drills and they appear to be fairly standard cordless drill/drivers fitted with fairly standard keyless chucks that you get hold of with both hands and twist in opposite directions like you are giving it a Chinese burn. The part of the chuck nearest the bit twists anti-clockwise to loosen.

If you have an SDS drill for heavier duty jobs the chuck is semi-automatic in the drill bit just needs pushing into the chuck and clicks into place but the outer part of the chuck is pulled back in order to release the bit.

How do I replace the chuck in my drill? It is making a grinding noise.

Chucks DON'T make grinding noises!!!!!

The grinding noise is probably coming from the REDUCTION GEARBOX which is located behind the chuck [the shaft upon which the chuck is mounted comes out of the gearbox].

There are usually four (4) screws mounting the gearbox housing/cover onto the motor/handle section of most drill/drivers.

The cause of most grinding nioses originating in the gearbox is lack of lubricating grease between moving parts.

Try rotating the driver adjustment to make sure it is on a definate number, not in between or put it all the way to the drill position. A little 3-in-one oil does wonders as dirt and dust will keep it from rotating and engaging easly. If this does not work and the clutch is stripped, cost of rebuilding it is not worth it, usually 70% to 80% of a new one and other parts on it will wear out and you will be fixing it again. Good Luck
