SOURCE: john deere 420 trouble starting getting gas and

The engine needs air, so be sure the air filter is clean. If it is not, replace it.

The engine needs spark. Replace the spark plug and be sure that the battery has a complete charge.

The engine needs good fuel so be sure the gas is newly purchased, not gas that has been sitting around for months.

SOURCE: I have a John deere 317 tractor that does not start.

We will be testing for voltage to the points, coil, engine to tractor wiring harness, ignition switch

Tools needed:
volt meter to read 12 volts, or test light

1) with the points open: is there voltage at the connection wire at the points
If yes; adjust points to .020" and try to crank engine and check for spark
*** you may want to determine if condensor is connected to this wire also
if no
2) check point side (neg or - ) of coil for voltage
if yes, engine should start
if no
3) check for voltage at the + side of coil
If yes, coil is bad
if no
4) check wire connector from engine to frame wiring harness
if yes; engine should start

if no
5) check wiring on the back of ignition switch
if yes; engine should start

if no
6) check that ignition switch RED or BATTERY supply wire has voltage
if yes; switch is bad

if no
7) check supply wire and circuit breaker connected to the battery side of the solenoid
if yes; engine should start

if no; circuit breaker could be at fault or wire connector at battery supply

SOURCE: problem with John Deere L120 tractor

Park brake switch is the most likely culprit, any other would cause the tractor to not turn over in the crank position.

John Deere 790 stalling out

My problem with my John Deere 790 stalling was my safety seat switch. It's a quick fix! What I had to do to fix my 2006 John Deere 790, was:
1. Un-hook the switch wires under the seat that connect to the seat switch.
2. Then, connect all of them with little wire clamps (or you can use a raw wire and connect them all) inside the wire connector, with the 4 connectors in it, to bypass the seat switch. Hot wire all of them together. It somehow resets the switch.
3. Then, with my 790 Deere in neutral, I started it up and held the key in starter position for about 2 seconds. (Instead of letting go right when it fires up) Somehow, in doing this, the seat switch reset and I was able to reconnect the switch and the seat switch works as it should now. My Deere 790 front loader fires right up without stalling now, while in neutral, of course. So, try this first because it's a quick fix. I hope this helps.
Cheers,
Aaron

Where is the drain plug for the transmission on the john deere 4210 tractor

There should be a pipe type plug in the bottom of the transmission housing near the draw bar inline with the rear axle housings. Whether you have a hydrostatic drive or gear drive, the plug is in the same place. Reference # six in drawing.

1989 JD 2155 2WD tractor, cannot start engine, have replaced starter switch, nothing happens, battery good. What should I check next?

Have you tried crossing the large post of the starter with the small terminal that has the engagement wire going to it[with the machine in neutral and the range lever in neutral if course].If this will make the tractor turn over then the problem is likely the neutral safety switch located under the panel that is covering the transmission just rear of the sticks.

John Deere 2010 utility tractor, lights come on dash board, but it wont start. Its in neutral, PTO is okay, seat switch okay

1) Battery condition and clean cable connections
2) Check the voltage & connections at the solenoid
*Is full battery voltage found at the solenoid?
3) Does the small wire that activates the solenoid from the ignition switch/safety switches have voltage when the key is in the start position

a) voltage yes, but it does not start; suspect solenoid
b) voltage no, inspect and check all safety switches for voltage to and from each switch
c) safety switches do NOT have voltage to them: inspect connections on ignition switch and check for voltage coming into the switch from the battery.
