Question about Maxtor Shared Storage II 2TB Network External Dual-Drive Hard Drive
Have tried pinging IP addresses. Have used a LAN scanner to find the IP address but it does not show. Have reset the drive to factory, have reloaded the MAXTOR software but this still does not find the drive. All the lights on the drive seem to indicate that the drive is live. The router is polling the drive as evidenced by the router and drive port light activity.
I understand that when rebooted from factory the drive will either take an IP address from the router or will default to a fixed address. Does anone know what this fixed address is ?
Any suggestions on how to find this drives address wld be welcome.
I had the same problem. My lights were on but I could not see the IP address of the maxtor. It was because I changed my router IR to 192.168.100.1.
The router could not see the maxtor IP address becauce it was too low.
IE the maxtor was 192.168.1.3
Try to log into your router via web interface.
Change your router IP to 192.168.1.1
Make sure your set to DHCP on your router.
Then reset your Maxtor via the pin hole below the nic.
Paper clip in the pin hole hold,
turn off then turn back on,
after few sec release the pin hole.
Then you can mount the maxtor via the maxtor software.
Hope this works for you.

Testimonial: "Thanks. Tried changing the IP range many times but no luck. Have now found the drive but can't get at the user date held on it, only the public area"
Download and install Wireshark(www.wireshark.org) on your PC. Attach the storage box and your PC and nothing else to a switch. Start a capture and you'll start to see all of the packets that your PC sees on its network interface. They will include a column for source address. The one that doesn't match your PC has to be the storage box.
If this doesn't help, connect the two devices directly together(you'll need a crossover cable if your PC NIC doesn't support MDIX and try the Wireshark capture again - this WILL work. The first option is dependent on the storage box sending out some sort of broadcast packets which is likely but not certain.
