Question about Maxtor Shared Storage II 2TB Network External Dual-Drive Hard Drive

2 Answers

Can't find the IP address of the Maxtor Shared storeage II drive.

Have tried pinging IP addresses. Have used a LAN scanner to find the IP address but it does not show. Have reset the drive to factory, have reloaded the MAXTOR software but this still does not find the drive. All the lights on the drive seem to indicate that the drive is live. The router is polling the drive as evidenced by the router and drive port light activity.

I understand that when rebooted from factory the drive will either take an IP address from the router or will default to a fixed address. Does anone know what this fixed address is ?

Any suggestions on how to find this drives address wld be welcome.

I had the same problem. My lights were on but I could not see the IP address of the maxtor. It was because I changed my router IR to
The router could not see the maxtor IP address becauce it was too low.
IE the maxtor was

Try to log into your router via web interface.
Change your router IP to
Make sure your set to DHCP on your router.

Then reset your Maxtor via the pin hole below the nic.
Paper clip in the pin hole hold,
turn off then turn back on,
after few sec release the pin hole.

Then you can mount the maxtor via the maxtor software.

Hope this works for you.

Download and install Wireshark( on your PC. Attach the storage box and your PC and nothing else to a switch. Start a capture and you'll start to see all of the packets that your PC sees on its network interface. They will include a column for source address. The one that doesn't match your PC has to be the storage box.

If this doesn't help, connect the two devices directly together(you'll need a crossover cable if your PC NIC doesn't support MDIX and try the Wireshark capture again - this WILL work. The first option is dependent on the storage box sending out some sort of broadcast packets which is likely but not certain.

LAN cannot see on arp -a command prompt

sometimes you have to ping the device before an ARP request will be sent. If you are trying to find out the IP address, use a network scanner. Some wireless utilities will actually give you the IP address of the AP you are connected to also. If all else fails, factory reset the router and you will then know the IP address.

HP printers lose their IP settings all the time, print the TCP configuration report from the printer and look to see what IP address the router has assign to the printer. If there is no address then the router is not communicating with the printer. If there is an address, try to ping it from your computer by hitting the start-run-cmd (black box appears) ping ipaddress (ping example. there should be no packet lost.

Initially check whether the ip address is assigned in the computer in which internet is not browsing using the command ipconfig/all for windows and ifconfig for linux. If ip is present try to ping the default gateway ip address,if ping is success there is no issue in the cable you used and also with ip address. If ip is not assigned assign ip by manually or by using dhcp of router.Enable and disable the lan card in the router so that sometimes the problem get resolved. After ip is assigned and ping with router is ok .Ensure dns servers are correct else give google public dns server try to ping in command prompt if ping is success then you can browse.

Stored static ip address in nas server and cant

I have a similar problem. There is a reset pinhole switch just beneath where the Ethernet port is that if you push it is supposed to reset the drives name and switch it to DHCP. You can see this in the manual. Unfortunately, this hasn't worked for me and I'm working through another solution to see if I can find the IP it is attached to.

Copystar cs 305 scanner is not connecting to computer

I do not know much about the situation but, I'll give it a try. First turn the pwr off to the scanner and try to ping agian just to make sure you are not trying to use an ip adress that is aleady being used. You should not recieve a responce untill you turn the power back on but, if you do get a reponce while the scanner is off change the ip adress on the scanner. Next if that did not help, you will need a correct path to your computer from the scanner like example( \\server\public\scans ) next you will need a username and password to gain access to the shared folder..

Can not access Dlink DNS313

When you said you tried resetting, did you mean you clicked on the reset button inside the hardware or did you mean you just rebooted?

* If you clicked on the rest buttion, then you need to configure again from scratch. Not sure if your data will still be available though.

* If you just rebooted, then the problem may lie in your LAN configuration. Do the following:

1. Try to ping the device using a PC connected to the same network.
2. If you are using DHCP, your device may just have been assigned a different IP. Try to ping all devices in your network or use a network scanner (e.g. SoftPerfect) to find out the IP address given to it.
3. Once you get the IP address, assign a static IP address to your device that is beyond the DHCP scope. This will ensure that your IP does not change and you will not have a conflict with DHCP assigned IP's.

That's a LAN network IP addres, if the router is on default settings it's ip address is the address wich you are talking about is a Host address, that means it could be a computer's, but don't know from the information wich you provided that if there's any computer supposed to be on that address or not.
If there is than that computer should run a WEB server to show you anything.
If you want to know wich IP addresses are being used by computers on your LAN try out Advanced Lan Scanner, sometimes it's showing the router as well, depends on the brand. It won't show you any computers with Vista because till LAN file shareing is not enabled on them they won't respond to ping requests and that service is disabled by default in Vista.
If you want to log in to your router and need the default password check out here.

Unable to see Shared Storage Drive II on EasyManage via Wireless

Just got a Maxtor Share II drive and absolutely love it. Setting it up was a pain especially when the drive didn't remember the Administrators password.
Here's what I think the problem may be

1-Your router is not assigning an IP address to the drive
2-Make sure your router is configured to DHCP IP configuration not Static.
3-Before trying to use the drive make sure to install the Software/Drivers first.
Other suggestions

This may or may not apply to you. I got my Maxtor drive on 4-07-08 and from previous experiences with other computer products, ie, windows software, printer drivers, etc. The manufacturer in order to rush things out the cd software that comes with the product is not the final version and most likely the software already has an update on the manufacturer’s web site so it’s always good to check before committing to what you get on the CD. So sure enough the BIOS for my Maxtor Share II 500Gig hard drive was already old. I downloaded the new version upgraded the BIOS and my drive is working great. I hope this suggestions help. Enjoy your drive. Alfredo.
