Question about Office Equipment & Supplies

Quality starts out good, and then fades quickly

When printing, the first 1/2 inch of the printed image is great quality, then the image turns a redish streaky hue. I have ink in both cartridges, and the image I am trying to print is mostly black and grey.

It is problem an off brand toner, I have run into this before with the 5550 DN. Off brand toners or remanufactured toners will cause some fadeing on the bottom of the page.

Why do my pictures look faded with up and down stripes?

Check the paper to make sure you are using the correct paper type for the project. If the paper is too fibrous, the ink applied by the printer might not fully cover the print surface.
  1. In the program being used for printing, click File , and then click Pring . The Print window opens.
  2. Make sure the appropriate product is selected, and then click Preferences or Properties . The Preferences/Properties window opens.
  3. Click the Printing Shortcuts tab. Consider modifying some or all of the options in the Printing Shortcuts menu to increase print quality.
    • Print quality : If the quality of the printouts is not acceptable, try increasing the print quality. To print more quickly, try decreasing the print quality.
    • Paper type : If one of the options matches the paper type exactly, select it instead of Automatic .
    • Paper size : Make sure that this option matches the paper loaded in the product.
To see additional options, click the The Advanced Features window opens. Consider changing the following option: Ink volume : Adjust the amount of ink that prints on a page. For lighter images (less ink), drag the slider to the left. For darker images (more ink), drag the slider to the right. The lighter the ink volume, the more quickly the printout dries.
Press and hold the asterisk (* ) and pound (# ) buttons on the product control panel.
  1. When the control panel reads *******#######, release the asterisk (* ) and pound (# ) buttons.
  2. Press the 3 , 2 , and 9 buttons, in that order.
  3. Press the right arrow button (c00420524.gif ) to select Special Reports , and then press OK .
  4. Press the right arrow button (c00420524.gif ) to select Print Cartridges , and then press OK

HOW TO GET THE BEST DIGITAL PRINTS...

Printing a photo but not getting it upto your expectation.....?? No worries just fiddle a little bit
with the printing options and keep in mind some important points that I am going to tell you....it will help:

1) RESOLUTION OF THE IMAGE TO BE PRINTED... Always keep in mind while printing a digital
printout that the resolution should be best fitted i.e. of the original photo.... if you stretch A photo too
much or squeeze you might not get the desired result. It depends upon the DPI i.e
dots per inch that appear on the paper in the snap that you print. To get a quality print you must
make sure to select proper dpi for an image in printing. Eg. for printing a snap of 300 dpi you must choose
the image resolution as 600 dpi, but in case of professionally required image quality you can select upto 24oo dpi.

2) PRINTING PAPER ... Make sure that the paper you are using is suitable for the ink and the printer that
you are using. Certain printers specially design Photo Paper suitable for the ink used in them for eg. HP printers
do have Hp photo papers to give a good quality of image.

3) SETTINGS IN THE PRINTER... You can adjust the image quality that you want by clicking on the
Properties Option in the printer dialog box that opens when you give a print command. for eg. you can select
Economy mode for saving the ink (but this will not give a good quality image as colors to will be low),
or you can use the Bes option, as suitable for you...

So next time you Print a photo or snap of yourself make sure to remember these points and have fun.....

Good Luck!!

Print quality: dark faded, but continuous

Open top cover and remove toner, shake toner cartridge and try a test print. IF image good then problem is low toner level in cartridge.

How to improve print quality Cleaning the print head
To ensure good print quality, the MFC will regularly clean the print head. You can start the cleaning process manually if needed. Clean the print head and ink cartridges if you get a horizontal line in the text or graphics on your printed pages. You can clean Black only or three colors at a time (Cyan/Yellow/Magenta), or all four colors at once.
Cleaning the print head consumes ink. Cleaning too often uses ink unnecessarily.
Caution
Do NOT touch the print head. Touching the print head may cause permanent damage and may void the print head’s warranty.
1 Press Ink.
2 Press or to select Cleaning.
Press Menu/Set.
3 Press or to select Black, Color or All.
Press Menu/Set.
The MFC will clean the print head. When cleaning is finished, the MFC will go back to standby mode automatically. If you clean the print head at least five times and the print has not improved, call Brother Customer Service (see Brother numbers on page i).
Checking the print quality
If faded or streaked colors and text appears on your output, some of the nozzles may be clogged. You can check this by printing the Print Quality Check Sheet and looking at the nozzle check pattern.
1 Press Ink.
2 Press or to select Test Print.
Press Menu/Set.
3 Press or to select Print Quality.
Press Menu/Set.
4 Press Color Start.
The MFC begins printing the Print Quality Check Sheet.
5 Check the sheet to see if the quality is OK by following these steps:
Color block quality check
The LCD shows:
6 Check the quality of the four color blocks on the sheet.
7 If all lines are clear and visible, press 1 (Yes), and go to Step 10.
OR
If you can see missing short lines as shown below, press 2 (No).
The LCD will ask you if the print quality is OK for black and three colors.
OK Poor
Is Quality OK?
1.Yes 2.No
Black OK?
1.Yes 2.N
8 Press 2 (No) for Black or three colors
with a problem.
The LCD shows:
Press 1 (Yes). The MFC will start cleaning the print head.
9 After cleaning is finished, press Color Start. The MFC will start
printing the Print Quality Check Sheet again and then return to
step 5.
10 Press Stop/Exit.

Printing fades during the print job. Dark at beginning, gets lighter to unreadable.

Is the ink cart. good? If not, replace.
Are the Print Heads cleaned? If not, run the diag to clean.
Does this happen on all print jobs? (documents, images, etc..)
If not, then try to adjust the properties of the print driver to a lesser quality.
Sending higher quality print jobs takes up memory, try to increase your page file.

If your toner saver is off and still getting faded quality means you mirrors and Scanning Lamp are not reflecting images properly.
Now if you are handy on printer then you need to take off glass

Fading cartridge problems

That printer is pretty old. Are you selecting "Best" quality when you print or is it possible that some documents are being printed in Quick Print mode (which puts less ink on the page)? If you're doing the same thing on each print job but the print quality changes, there's definitely a problem. If you're printing from web pages, the print quality may be a factor of the design of the pages. If you print two pages of a multi-page document and quality declines, you should be able to get help through Lexmark's technical support.
