I have a 97 Chevy C6500 with a 3116 Cat. It just started acting like it's losing fuel pressure . If I turn engine off and restart it runs good for a few miles then starts acting up again.

ok now understand post drives find on highway no car model told no engine told. of 3 made,2.4L not told if idle fails hot and cold engines./ my guess is hot only. (because cold runs fast idle) not told, idle fails in all PRNDL gears (of automatic box,if is.) ) fails in drive but not Park or reverse or both. it is misfiring, spark parts new. so EGR stuck open or gross fueling errors at idle.
what is mileage on this car/engine? 500KM? 300,000 miles." ? what is engine RPM at idle failing does engine stall at idle , hot and cold? in PARK ? all I have are questions,. to fix cars we do tests. lots of test with tool, meters and gauges. but 1997 I make sure the EGR valves closed 100% at idle. must. and IAC works, right, Idle air control. injector balance tests. no engine told so no going forward.(specifics)
hi.fault codes indicate feul presure or leaks.if feul presure is ok and no vacuum leaks at vacuum pipes intake manifold or brakebooster it can be a exhaust leak if no leaks it can be a blocked cat or not enough back presure like exhaust box removed or cat insides removed .hope this helps
The older model vortec engines needed more fuel pressure than 60psi to run. You might want to verify the min amount for your model. Have you replaced the fuel filter recently ? Is the check engine light coming on ?
, i had this problem on my truck had to get another fuel pump, which was oem, it pumps more gpm. the injectors won't open if not enough pressure, sorry
Replace the FUEL PUMP RELAY. Its located in the under hood relay center. This relay primes the pump with the key on, about 2 seconds, then the pump will not run until the engine has oil pressure, then the fuel pump is energized.
the fuel pump could actually be malfunctioning. and the reason that you are able to restart and drive again is because when you turn the key on it is allowing the fuel pump to pressureize your system. but while the fuel pump is continuasly running it is loosing the fuel pressure. this is common on the cheap fuel pumps. i am not sure about were you got the fuel pump from but in all of my experiances with this problem i find that the fuel pumps have been boughten at a napa store.
i hope this helps you out.
and you could attach a fuel pressure gauge on to the fuel rail and start the car and watch the pressure to see if it is droping.
Just from what you said it sounds like your vehicle might not be holding its residual pressure which means after you turn a vehicle off, your fuel injection system should hold a certain amount of pressure in the system, but if that pressure drops to fast your vehicle may have a hard time starting. Things to look for when you lose fuel pressure is the fuel pressure regulator may be leaking, fuel pump check valve, leaky fuel injector or they maybe a small leak in one of the fuel lines. I only suggested this cause i had a car with the similar problem.
You will need to do a fuel pump pressure leak-down test, the pump must not loose more than 5 PSI overnight, u will need a cheap fuel pressure test guage, the test port is on the fuel supply rail to the injectors on the intake manifold, it looks like a tire valve but metal with a plastic cap on it, u may be able to borrow this guage from Kragen, Autozone or a parts store like them, if not they are very cheap, less than $20 US. Run the engine with the test guage hooked up, turn off the engine and then check it in an hour or so, if it drops more than 5 PSI then u will need to replace the fuel pump in the gas tank. One note make sure the connection for the guage is tight with no leakage or the test is invalid
