Well it may if the oil was not replenished in the transaxle after engine recondition if it was out of chassis recondition. Other wise it may now just be too weak to handle stronger engine. Also it may need a linkage adjustment.
Thanks Daryl my Macanic pretty much pulled the engine out and replaced headgaskets , timing Balt , radiator, caps, and oil filter he said he didn't work on the tranny I said it must be the way you put it back in that links the engine to tranny as it was fine before the recon so I'm taking it back tomorrow to see what exactly is the problem but from what I've said what do you think as the Macanic thinks the tranny is gone but like I said it was all fine before the recon it was only overheating that's why I got him to recon the engine and now it only moves in forward gears? Thanks

Hi,
The first place I would look is the shift linkage for wear and a sloppy connection from wear.
adjustments may be made as a possible fix on the linkage rod.
Glad to be of assistance - Please rate the response - I can learn from your rating. Thank you

Yes the manual for the 740 should be good enough. some of the hoses will go to different locations to the charcoal canister. and the Intercooler will probably have different pipes. Make sure you take pictures when you remove the hoses. Be careful especially around older rubber hoses on the Turbo - Intercooler system as these can be expensive to replace

Remove valve covers, drain radiator. remove hoses& linkage, distributor, intake manifold, loosen rockers and remove pushrods. disconnect exhaust pipes (dont worry too much if a stud breaks, you can replace them once out of car.) remove exhaust manifolds, remove head bolts. take heads off. clean off all surfaces and don't get any debris in engine. Get a manual if this is scary...Replace in reverse order. Check heads for cracks between valves, head torque is 65lbs, intake is anything around 30. Mark distributor so you can put it back in exactly like it came out...once nearly in, they usually stop. keep light hand pressure on it and turn engine by hand & it will drop the rest of the way in. tighten rockers till you can just spin the pushrod Move engine position to do any that have spring tension. adjust lash running by loosening till they clatter, turning till no noise and 1/2 turn further. When adjusting, oil will go everywhere so do it somewhere you can make a mess.
try checking your transmission oil (i had the same problem but after $30 it was fixed) it might had drained out. if your transmission oil is fine then consult a mechanic preferebly an automatic transmission specialist. may be your transmission needs a rebuild.

Your transmission friction plate may need replacement.
Check it up.
