Question about Maytag Neptune MDE5500AY Electric Dryer
You need to first remove the door (4 screws on the left side and 4 on the right where the door is located (should be philips). Then you need to remove that front frame by removing a bunch of 5/16 screws with a nut-driver. Then the top cover comes right off and then you can remove the belt from the pully and remove the drum. It's kind of complicated but if you do it once or twice, it gets simple. Good luck :)

SOURCE: We have a maytag neptune
i would replace the belt usually over time the belt streaches due to the weight of the clothes. the screaching ou are hearing is probably the belt going aound the drum instead of turning the drum.

Catriver was right on the mark. Took a little bit of doing but I was able to fix the problem myself within 30 mins, and saved some money. Many thanks. I'd like to expand Catriver's solution a bit.
I found a layer of lint on the inside bottom of my dryer. With the face off of the dryer, it proved to be a good time to vacuum the lint out and reduce the potential of fire.

The instructions above are perfect for most Maytag Dryers, but the Neptune MDE4000AYW is built differently from most. To open it, undo the two screws that run through the door hinges, and remove the door, then undo the two other screws that are on the opposite side of the doorway. With these four screws out, you can lift the front panel UP and out. Make sure you unplug the dryer first :-)

Have someone change the bearing, it sounds like it has busted on ya. The rumbling sounds like the ball bearings in the bearing have failed.
