Question about GE JES1289SK Microwave Oven

Timer Shuts off after 5 seconds

My microwave oven timer shuts off after about 5 seconds. The convection part of the timer and the grill part of the timer seem to be working. Anyway, if I sent the timer for anything in the microwave portion it'll run about 5 minutes and then shut off and the time appears on the clock. You don't have to reset it or anything. Anyone have any ideas short of throwing it in the garbage?

Re: Timer Shuts off after 5 seconds

The first thing to try is a "hard reset". Unplug it from the power line for a few minutes, plug it back in, set the clock, then try again.

Is it 5 seconds or 5 minutes? The difference coulsd be important, but either could indicate a bad magnetron.

Let us know if the hard reset doen't fix it.

My sharp will only run for 59 seconds and then shuts off. It will heat up what ever you are heating but shuts off after 59 secounds no matter how many minutes you program into it.Is there a simple solution...

Yes the timer has the problem, now a day it is built in on microcontroller if your microwave is digital control. The only you can do is send it to nearest service center in your area where they have that parts.
I do hope my advice help you.

Sharp model R-1871 shuts off every 59 seconds

This is a problem in one of the damper-related components, either the switch or motor or the damper door may be binding.

The damper is a door inside that opens or closes depending on cooking mode. If the controller senses that the door is not in the right position, it will shut down the cook cycle.

Sharp models stop after 59 seconds.

See the attached sample drawing for a typical damper assembly.

We have the applicable service manuals for these models and have uploaded it to our site here and here to help you.

If a switch is all you need, we offer a universal type for only $5 postpaid which you can order here.

Microwave convection oven repair needed

Check the internal fuse. Unplug it, unscrew and take off the cover, the fuse should be easily found in the back by the power cord. I tlooks like a regular fuse but is white instead of clear glass because microwave fuses are special. You'll have to measure it with a meter as a result and be sure to replace it with the same kind. (try finding them at radio shack) Hopefully there isn't something more serious also.
