Question about Kenmore Refrigerators

Kenmore Whirlpool Refrigerator metal between doors hot; fan ok

One year ago this month we replaced the bad start relay with the real Whirlpool replacement relay part (NOT 3 in 1 generic). Since that time the refrigerator seems to run a lot more than before and even makes static on the TV when it turns on. The metal between the doors is frequently hot. The fan is working fine. The coils are as clean as we can get them. Aside from double checking the relay wiring order any ideas what the problem could be? (PS There is nothing in the instructions about turning off the energy saver.)

Thanks for your suggestions but after reading more here about this problem discovered that not putting the cardboard backing back on is likely the cause as it has vents that direct the air over the compressor. So much for easy access to keep coils clean, putting this back on has so far solved this problem. Thanks.

My Whrilpool 3 Door Protton refrigerator was found cooling only freezer compartment, not refrigerated compartment. Local mechanic told that it is a defrost problem and replaced two bi-metal thermostat

this seems to be a major issue with whirlpool and kitchenaid multiple door refrigerators. The defrost timer device on the compressor does not function properly or fails and the cooling coils freeze up. Check the little fan that pulls air through the freezer coils to make sure it is running (that cools the refridg) if not running then it is bad and causing problem. Otherwise you have another bad defrost relay on the compressor. It's easy to change and cost about $25 at the parts store. I just defrost mine every six months or so since none of the ones I tried work very well. Its just a bad design that is still propagating in whirlpool devices.

If the compressor is overheating I would check the condensor fan and make sure it's turning. Sounds like you wouldn't have noticed this already though. Also, if the compressor is turning on for 5 or 10 seconds and then clicking off then your start relay is probably bad. Pull the relay off the compressor and shake it. If something is loose inside then it's bad. That is, if it's a whirlpool made kenmore. Kenmore doesn't make appliances they only brand them. The refrigerator could have been made by Whirlpool, Frigidaire, GE, LG, Maytag, Amana, or other. So, it's depenant on who made it.

from your description it sounds like your hearing the start relay trying to start your compressor. most likely this relay is bad and needs replacing.

let fridge cool down it sounds like the relay overload is bad try replacing it with a 3 n 1 start kit directions on the kit real easy to hook up... if the compressor starts then you are ok... hopefully the compressor is not burned out good luck
