Ryobi Tiller Model 454 ,doesn't what to go into reverse

I have a Ryobu Rear Tine Tiller Model 454 purchase in 2004. Started it up than, but didn't use it till this summer because of job troubles. (The muffler wasn't even black yet) The trouble with it is: most of the time it doesn't go into reverse some times (1 out of 10time) it does. I even do what the manual says by moving it slightly back ward so the gears can synchronize. Other wise I like it. Was there a recall than and I missed it. I know my warranty was up a long time ago. Any suggestions! I'm a handyman and can work on it mechanicly. thanks randysray1@yahoo.com

SOURCE: Yard Machines/Tiller

the tines are usually connected with shear bolts designed to break away when u hit something as a safety precaution so that u dont break anything in the transmission. its common that people dont know this and replace them with normal bolts. if this was done and the tines are not moving now chances are uve got a snapped gear shaft

-Check the locking bolt that hold the tine shaft to the main shaft. Possibly it's broken. If so replace new bolt. you should be good to go again.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.

Find the long model number on your tiller. Then go to this site: http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/owner_manuals
Enter your model number and searh for you manual. When the manual is found click get manual or rt click the manual you want Owner, Engine, or parts and download it. The instructions will be in the manual.

This is an example of a model number: 917295852 and the manual for that rear tine tiller is here:

Need to see belt route for gilson bros. tiller

You did not state if it was a front or rear tine tiller. This is for the front tine tiller:
http://photos.cubfest.com/albums/userpics/10231/Belt_Routing.jpg
The rear belt has a 1/2 twist in it for reverse. The front belt goes on nomally.

If this does not help you I would like a model number if you can locate it so I can get your the proper routing diagram.

Tines stop under load

you have to get someone with a big tractor to "break" the ground up first. A tiller is just that...Not a plow

Tines only spin in the T position.with cutch engaged. If thats not it split the case and check to see the shift fork operating properly. Or that chains are not broke. NOTE This is a serious job!!!

Help, new craftsman rear tine tiller stopped tilling.

It sounds like the belt just stretched. Now you need to move the belt tensioner over to put more pressure on it.
