Switch back to XP. Vista has some serious USB issues. Back up will take days or weeks because it is very slow. And in the process you might even damage the hardware because of the extended period of continuous running.Check out the link to find out other users who are cursing VISTA

Insert your Windows Vista Basic CD into the CD ROM drive and restart your computer.

It will autoboot from the CD and you can reinstall Vista Basic.

Should you have further problems don't hesitate to give more details.

My book premium edition ii and windows vista

I am running 4 WD SATA drive internally on Vista Ultimate, and no problem. I have a simpletech USB 360gb external drive that I had not used after the VISTA install. After reading your problem, I hooked it up and turned it on, and it worked just fine. However, the computer forums are FULL of folks complaining about the My Book drives. WD site shows extra drivers for Win98 (as expected) and nothing for VISTA (would not think you would need one)

I would disconnect the MY BOOK. Get the PC running on its internal drives. Remove any MY BOOK drivers (they are likely for Win98). Reboot the PC. Connect the MY BOOK drive to a usb port and turn it on. If it doesn't come up as an external drive, I would think there was something wrong with it and contact Western Digital. You SHOULD NOT require VISTA drivers for any USB device. My warranty experience with WD has always been outstanding. Hope this helps

How do you run a Western Digital external hard drive?

you can store, or load anything on it, when you install programs you can select that drive so you don't use up your internal, causing it to run slow.

Does the drive make any wierd noises? If it sounds OK, but it's just not showing up on your computer, It means the bridgeboard probably fried out, but your data is still safe. If this is the case, you should purchase a new parallel ATA 3.5" hard drive enclosure, remove your drive and put it into the new enclosure. It's really simpler than it sounds. If you're not comfortable doing all that, You should bring it in to your local computer repair store. If, however the drive is making clicking or grinding noises, you'll need a technician to attempt to recover the data for you. Feel free to contact me with any other questions. -inky
