Replacing a switch

Several attempts at replacing a switch in our bathroom have failed. We have successfully replaced a switch in our other bathroom without a problem. We don't have a voltmeter.

Danger!
If you do not have a voltmeter how do you know that you have the power disconnected? Voltmeters are very inexpensive and easy to use, Radio Shack has some cheap ones. Protect your self Pleazzz.

that said if you changed the switch, checked the bulb, and still don't have lights then check breaker to see if it is tripped

I attempted to register several new TCX 905s to my TRU 8866 base without success. I followed instructions from the owner's manual, from Uniden customer support, and from suggestions from this web site. ...

October 10th, 2013 at 9:19 amPROBLEM:
After de-registering handset, handset displays [REGISTRATION FAILED; UNAVAILABLE] when trying to register handset.
This worked for my UNIDEN TRU-9480-2
SOLUTION:
1) Remove handset from base
2) Remove power cord from back of base
3) Press and hold the [find hs] button on base as you plug the power supply back in; the charge light should then be blinking.
4) Return handset to base and it should register
GOOD LUCK!! HOPE THIS HELPS!!

Sounds like the key switch has failed. Either the switch or the linkage between the switch and the lock cylinder.

Home electrical

Hi Sammy,
It sounds like there is a direct short on the circuit. Before going any further, check other outlets on this circuit and make sure they do not have anything plugged in that is not expected and does not work. Check OUTSIDE your home, basement, garage, etc. as these locations require GFI protection - and may be fed from the bathroom outlet. After removing devices that are plugged into the circuit, attempt a reset of the breaker once more.
It is not likely that the circuit breaker has failed (but is a possibility). The outlet in the bathroom is probably a GFI type. You can determine this if it has "Test" and "Reset" buttons on it. You should be able to press the Reset button in fully even with power off. After resetting, you can attempt the resetting the circuit breaker as you have described above. If it stays on, try pressing the "Test" button on the outlet. Doing so should trip power to the outlet (and causing the "Reset" button to pop out) but leave the circuit breaker "On". If the breaker also trips, the GFI outlet is suspect and might need to be replaced.
At this point, a qualified electrician should be consulted to locate and clear the wiring fault.

Need to replace the light switch in my bathroom.

If the switch has only two terminals besides the ground, then yes, they are equivalent. BUT, do you have a ground wire? If this is an old house without a ground wire you have been lucky with the metal faceplate, especially in the bathroom. The new switch is no more dangerous without a ground wire than the old one was, but there is a reason they put that ground lug on there. If you don't have a ground wire, get a plastic faceplate.
