You will need to install a color cartridge, too.

Oddly enough, with color printers, both the black and color ink/s are used to print black. Go figure?

use a new cartridge

Inkjet printers needs to be used frequently. When not used for three or more months, the head gets clogged and damaged. On your case, per your notes, I believe the printer head needs to be replaced. I don't think it will be cost-effective to repair as a new head printer may be quite expensive. Today printers are cheap to be fixed.

Sometimes the remanufactured cartridges sit around for a time and the ink dries at the print head. Does the ink come out freely when you touch it on a damp paper towel? If not, this may be the fault. To clear the print head, I have heated some water in the microwave for 30 seconds and put just the print head in the hot water for a few seconds. If no microwave, use hottest available tap water. I have used a refill syringe to add a little pressure through the filler hole while in the water to purge the print head. I now refill my own, but have bought the same product and needed to purge them. I have the same printer. If this is not the cure , let me know, we can find the solution.

Many 'refilled' cartridges aren't refilled. Try a new c artridge and see what happens. If it still doesn't work, you need a new print head.

try to unplug it and plug it back in

your MCY (color) cartridge is damaged, or either needs cleaning, try to remove this and clean the head with a soft cloth and re-install once again, if it doest work then replace the cartridge

you need to print only in black if that is all the ink you have, and also you need to remove the color cartridge as it still registers in the printer as able to be used, although it is empty or near so. Did you remove the tape over the print head fron the new ink cartridge? Do a print head alignment, or use the toolbox icon to tell the printer that you just replaced the cartridge. Some HP models chip the ink cartridges so even a refill wont register as a full tank and the printer wont print. chip needs to be reset (difficult) or just replaced with a new cartridge.
