Sergers are absolute "bears" when threading compared to sewing machines. If/when you get frustrated, walk away. It took me the majority of one day before successfully getting my first serger threaded properly. Using four different color threads is also helpful when learning the serger--especially when it comes to adjusting the tension.

It is very important to pay attention to the order the threads are threaded, as well as making sure the thread path for each is correct. (Consult your owner's manual as different brands will look different.) Most machines require that the upper looper be threaded BEFORE the lower looper because the lower looper thread will cross OVER the upper looper thread as the final step before going under the presser foot.

ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot when threading!!! This releases the tension disks.

Also, when threading through the tension disk, be sure to give the thread an extra little tug to make sure the thread seats firmly in the tension disk. (Grasp the thread just below the thread stand with one hand and then grasp the thread below the tension disk with the other hand and give a little tug--sometimes it will make a little popping noise when it seats.)

Start out with the tensions set at the midway point. From that point, you can test your machine to make sure it is serging properly. Then you can adjust the tensions to suit you or the project you are making.

If the either looper thread breaks or pulls out, remove BOTH looper threads and rethread from the beginning!!! Trying to finagle threading of only one thread will most often result in a machine that will not operate correctly. Just bite the bullet and rethread both threads (in the order specified in the manual).

I seem to have trouble using the tweezers to thread the looper eyes, so I use dental floss threaders instead.

One more hint: NEVER pull the thread out of the machine by pulling it UP through the machine. This could damage or wear the tension disks. Always clip the threads just below the thread stand, RAISE the presser foot, and then pull the clipped threads DOWN through the looper eyes and needles.

Be sure to clean and oil your serger frequently. This is very important to get the best performance from your machine. Use only fresh oil recommended by the manufacturer and apply only a couple drops each spot.

I am struggling to get the perfect tension on an Empisal Overlocker S4D, using viscose fabric which is a soft drapey fabric. The top stitches look OK but the bottom loops are very loopy!

Suggest threading your machine with 4 different colors of thread and then testing it on a scrap of your fabric. With the colored threads, you will be able to tell which thread tensions need to be adjusted. The type of fabric you are sewing may also be causing a problem. Be sure to use brand new needles!

Have a Empisal S4D overlocker being threaded as per manual but do not stich can you help?

Be sure to ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot when threading the machine.

Unless the machine is out of time, the usual cause of stitch failure is that the threading is not correct. If the threads are not threaded in EXACT order and/or any of the threading steps are out of order or missed, the machine will not stitch properly.

You can always take it to a repair shop and ask them to check it for you.

Hi i have a empisal 550d overlocker . I have difficulty with cotton breaking after sewing for a few seconds. Can you help please ?

Could be the tension is set too high on that particular thread tensioner.

If it is not the tension, then this is the first thing to try (I know, it's painful but 99% of the time takes care of my issue): Remove all the threads from the machine, ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and then rethread from the beginning. Verify that you are threading each in the "proper" order and that the threadpath for each is correct.

If it is a needle thread, replace with a brand new needle. Try a different brand of thread or spool on that particular threadpath. AVOID old or bargain bin thread. Check to make sure that particular thread is not hanging up on a burr, a sharp spot, or looped in the thread tree, etc. that catches the thread and holds it from advancing through the path.

Hi. I have a new overlocker. Fabric got jammed ,got it out but machine now jams at half turn . Could some fabric still be under feed dogs ? How to get it out ?

Hello Jenny hornsey

This may sound traumatic, but there is no easy way to pin point where the tie-up is located. So proceed as follows.
Cut all the threads as they come off the antennas.

Open the front cover and pull-out all the threads by pulling them straight toward the back. If they do not come easily, try moving the hand wheel back and forth by a 1/4 revolution .. this is like a rocking motion. If still not budging, start cutting back the threads and removing them in sections until all the threads are cleared. If this step is still challenging; check that there is no residual fabric or threads still wrapped around the loopers or other part/s of the serger. If so cut them out bit by bit until everything below is cleared.

Great. Now check for threads wrapped and/or jammed anywhere above.

Since the overlocker jammed, it is possible that the needles were bent. This will continue to cause issues in stitch formation. So just to make sure; change the needle/s. Make sure that the correct needle type is being used. Every overlocker is engineered to be used with a specific needle type. The needle type will be specified in the manual and will also appear on the needle package. If the needle types are not the same, do not use those needles.

Re-thread the overlocker and stitch test on a piece of fabric before pressing down on the foot control.

This should get the overlocker back on track and you back to overlocking.

Please let me know how this works out for you.

Happy overlocking

When thread cotton. Cotton don't pick up bobbin cotton please help bernette65

Be sure to use a brand new needle. A bent/damaged needle may have difficulty picking up the bobbin thread.

Verify that both upper and bobbin threads are threaded correctly. If so, and it still fails to pick up the bobbin thread, most likely there is needle/hook timing issue. Take it for service.

Bernina 335 serger won't sew/overlock. carefully rethreaded the serger but that hasn't helped.

The 335 has a two thread chain stitch (stitch type 401), and the overlock side (right needle side), is a three thread plain overlock. If you are describing the plain overlock as the problem, I would first suggest the following in re-threading:

1. Thread the upper looper
2. Thread the lower looper
3. Thread the needle last (important)

If the needle threaded, you cannot re-thread the lower looper without breaking the thread.
In order to thread the lower looper, the lower looper must pass by the needle thus picking up the needle thread. So, instead of threading the lower looper thread underneath the needle thread, the looper would be threaded on top and cannot sew without breaking the thread.
Make sure that the threads are bedded between the tension disks. Check this by stretching the thread fore and aft of the tension disks as well as visually noting that the threads are not accidentally threaded behind the disks. You can also loosen the tension disks when threading so as to allow the threads to bed deeply between the disks.
Please reply with your observations.

I have a model 348 and have difficulty threading the needle. is there an automatic needle threader that can be added?

There are small plastic threaders that are like a hypodermic that pushes the thread through the eye....a good sewing and craft shop will have these, or a thin wire threader for an overlocker is a good option....but you cannot add to the machine itself, no, it was never an accessory....more expensive models tend to have them as a standard feature

Correct threading for 4 th. Juki ind. overlocker

Overlockers and or Sergers are ALWAYS threaded the same way. Upper looper, Lower looper, right needle, left needle. If you have a model number for your Juki we might be able to find you more information.

The best way to figure out tension problems is to thread each thread in a different color so you can determine which thread is giving you problems.

These machines can be frustrating and EVERY time the thread breaks you MUST start the threading problem from the beginning... upper looper, lower looper, right needle left needle.

Threading an Empisal Overlocker - Model S4D

All sergers thread the same way and sergers have to be threaded in a certain order. I made a jingle out of it...
upper looper
lower looper
right needle
left

It would be best to have a tweezers handy to help with the thread and threading.

always be sure the lower looper thread goes over the top of the upper looper then out the back. I would be surprised if your thread guides are not color coded.
If you look at the top thread guides or the spools. First from left to right thread the 3rd spool, then the fourth spool. Then you thread the right needle (the second spool) then the left needle (1st spool.
The lower looper can be tricky because you have to thread it from the back of the looper to the front.
Pull the threads out the back from under the foot. Then go ahead and run it slow watching to see if it starts making a chain. It should. If not do it over again.
Good luck

Thread wont overlock

When the thread breaks too often, try these, that goes for all sewing machines
1. Replace the needles,
2. Loosen slightly the tension of the needle threads.
3. The top threads are to thin,
4.The sewing (rotary) hook or looper, has burs,
5. Wrong threading
