Question about Meade LX200GPS Telescope

1 Answer

I have a Meade LX10 that won't track objects

I have a Meade LX10 that won't track and the hand box will not light up. If I could get it to track I'd be happy. Any ideas? It's an older telescope probably 15 years old or more.

Go online to the Yahoo LX90 or LX200 Group an post your question -- also you could have a broken clutch in the base.

First thing to do is to buy a new hand controller cable from Meade, If this does not correct the problem then either the hand controller is defective, or something is broken inside the scope.

Cables are not expensive, call Celestron:

To track the scope must:

2. Be well Trained using the training routine

3. Must have the correct TIME, DATE, and SITE, and Daylight Savings Time

I have a 10 year old Meade LX10 with Magellan computer. Do I need a separate power supply for the declination motor?

No, just one--- this scope runs off of 12 volt DC battery like a car starter battery pack-- that has a cigarette lighter style 12 volt cable. This plugs into the power console on the telescope. You need the proper 12 volt cable which you can get from Meade and other telescope retailers--

When i look through it everything is upside down

That's entirely normal and correct for ALL astronomical telescopes.

If you want to use it to view land or sea based objects (terrestrial viewing), you need to fit an erecting tube between the telescope and the eyepiece. This corrects the image at the expense of some loss of image quality which is OK for terrestrial daytime viewing but unacceptable for night-time astronomical viewing of what are mostly very faint low contrast objects.

Hi, I require the gear wheels for the DEC motor on my LX10. They are the ones that are situated outside the framework.

You can call Meade for replacement parts, or try to see if they have replacements.

Focusing problem with meade LX10

The focuser is poor at best in that series. There is an enhancement kit from that helps a lot, but the real fix is to get a crayford style focuser (zero backlash). The LX200GPS series has them as standard. Rough focus with the main mirror, and finish with the Crayford focuser.

Most problems tend to be mechanical. Have you 'trained' the drive and set the backlash values? Those 2 can have dramatic effects on pointing accuracy. Also, if the optical tube is not in alignment with the mount, then nothing will work correctly. To check that, have the telescope in Alt-Az configuration, inside the house, loosen the RA lock, and shine a laser pointer on the corrector plate. as the telescope is rotated about the RA, the reflected spot should be steady. Adjust the DEC to minimize the diameter of the circle that is drawn. What is left, is the out-of-true on the DEC axis. That can be adjusted with the tube cradle alignment bolts.
