Question about Bissell Lift-Off(R) Revolution(R) Turbo Upright Vacuum

1 Answer

The motor overheats and shuts off. This annoying because it has done it at least 5 times today during normal vacuuming. It shuts off easily when you use the hose and canister to clean the steps or around the floor. What can I do to alleviate this problem?

Almost all vacuum cleaners have a thermal cut-out, which operates when the machine gets too hot and resets automatically when it cools down. Overheating is almost always caused by a blockage. Either the filters need cleaning or changing, or there's an obstruction somewhere in the pipe-work. Make sure there's good clear air flow and your problem should be solved. Good luck!

Mine is doing it also. I discovered wear marks on the brush body on both sides of thedrive belt area. The brush body is warped and rubs against the housing. Te motor overheats as a result of trying to overcome the extra friction. So I'm on-line looking for replacement brushes.

Just bought and used but very hot is that normal

Hi Daun, it's Jack at Dyson.

Let me reassure you that it's normal for your Dyson Cinetic Big Ball to generate heat in use. You'll notice the exhaust air exiting the outlets in the ball shell feels warm - this is because it's just passed through the motor, which is also housed within the ball.

Like most Dyson vacuums, the Dyson Cinetic Big Ball is equipped with a thermal cutout, which would shut the machine down for protection if it actually started to overheat. Ordinarily this would be due to a temporary blockage, which should be easily resolved.

I hope this information answers your question, but remember our experts are on hand to help if you need further assistance at any point. You can reach the Dyson Customer Helpline by calling 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA) or 1800 239 766 (AU).

Vacuum cleaner stops

The motor has a thermal reset built in. If the filters need replaced the motor can overheat. Filters should be replaced frequently to insure proper cleaning suction and motor life

Shuts off aftr 10 miutes (ovrheating) protective relay?

sounds like an overheat problem. possibly due to motor overheat, or faulty protective relay. best way to find out is to run it until it cuts out, and see if the motor is very hot. if it is, you can replace the motor (as it can't be easily repaired), if it's not hot, the relay is faulty.

Dyson dc25 motor feels warm to the touch, should it be

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

It's normal for an electric motor to generate heat during use, and all of our upright and cylinder vacuums include a thermal cut-out which will automatically shut the machine off if it starts to overheat.

However, if your machine is making an unusual noise and isn't picking up as well as it should be, I'd encourage you to get in touch with us directly so we can take you through some quick diagnostic checks.

You can reach our freephone customer Helpline on 0800 298 0298 (UK), or 1-866-693-9766 (US). Our experts will be happy to help check everything's correct with your vacuum.

Best wishes,

Jack

Motor overheats and shuts off

The priamry cause of motors overheating is that the filters are not cleaned or replaced frequently enough. Once a motor starts to overheat, it has already been damaged and even after the filters have been cleaned, may well still overheat and cut-out. The motor has a built in over-current trip to protect itself (and you if it seriously overheated). This normally automatically resets itself, however if the motor has just about had it, the moemnt it is switched on, it just trips again.

Replacement motors are avaible on eBay for about £25, however repalcing one requires good DIY skills and tools.

Have a look at www.dysonmedic.com and see if you feel you can tackle it yourself. If not, take it to a repair shop or call the Dyson helpline.

Vacuum shuts off and has a burnt smell

Hi,
Try removing the drivebelt, and try running it to test like this. The brush bar will not turn, but it should function normally without smell at this point. If it doesn't, you may need a new motor as I think the brushes may have worn down - producing an electrical type burning smell.

If it runs fine without the belt attatched, then there is probably a build-up of hair or threads at each end of the roller stopping it turning freely. With the hoover off, check it turns freely and easily. A small metal nail file or similar is usually a good tool to clear it.

If the roller is stiff, the belt will not turn easily, and overheat on the motor spindle - causing the burning smell.

My hoover mach 5 stopped during use and will now not turn on

If the machine overheats, a breaker trips. Most breakers reset themselves after they cool off. You may have a manual reset button to push on your model. The machine will overheat if the bag is too full, or if the exhaust port is clogged. The reset switch is usually on the back of the motor housing, near the footswitch.

U5180-910 vacuum shuts off on own

I had same problem. Turned out to be the filter that sits above the waste cannister. Remove the waste cannister. There is a little orange lever that releases the filter. It was caked with dirt not allowing any air flow causing the motor to overheat.

This foam filter gets dirty pretty fast.

Vacuum shuts off

It sounds like the hose from the bottom part is plugged. The motor has a high temperature protection that will shut the motor off if it overheats but will come back on once it cools. The motor will overheat if any restriction of airflow occurs. If the overload sensor reacts too many times, it will eventuall start to shut off before it should, so you should address the problem asap. Check the area behind the roller and the hose leading up to the connection to the attachment hose for blockage. Also, make sure you are not setting the machine height adjust too low. This will make the bottom plate sit down too close and cause a restriction in air flow to the motor.
