Question about General Electric CDW9380N Built-in Dishwasher

GE diswasher hums but will not start cycle and starts to smell ho

My friend has a newer manufactured home with a GE dishwasher. I am not sure of the model. THe problem is that when you turn the dial, the dishwasher will hum, but will not start filling right away. You then get a hot smell and we turn it off. If you move the dial further into the cycle, then the dishwasher will start to fill, but nothing more happens. Where do I start? Could it be a bad switch or problem pump. My friends husband plays with something underneath and it starts working, but will only work once and it has to be done again.

Thanks for your input, but the inlet valve is on.. Any other thoughts?

  • mmossburg Jul 17, 2009

No I am sorry, but I don't. After reading some other postings, I thought it might be the drain valve solenoid or the flood float. It also might be hard warter deposits locking up the motor so the humming is from the motor trying to turn. I am going to try to tap the flood float and then I am going to spin the motor. If neither of those work, I might try replacing the solenoid to see what happens. I just wanted to get a starting point. I did check all the connectors to make sure they were on tight and I even looked for a reset switch on the motor. Any other ideas that might help me? Thanks for your input so far!!!

That is what I was afraid of... I will try to spin the motor to see if that works and maybe purchase a rebuild kit if they have one... Thanks for your help!!!

Hi, Have your freind check and see if the water supply line under the sink has been turned on. The hum you are hearing could be the inlet valve. Please let me know if this has been helpfull or if I can assist you further.

Ok, It must be a loose connection of some kind. Do you know what it is that he touches/moves in order for it to start?

I am sorry, I miss read your first post and didn't see the part about it getting water. The older motors use to need started by hand at times when they would sit for any lenght of time between uses or the bearing starts getting tight. The drain solenoid will hum and there should be a click noise when it engages. If the motor has a cooling fan blade on the motor and that is what he moves to get it started, you will need to change the pump/motor assembly to fix it. There is no reset buttons on these motors. There is a new style designed motor/pump they put in them now.

I am sorry but there are no rebuild kits either. That whole assembly need to be replaced. The cost is around $145.00

Diswasher will not start I had been running it and pushed the start button and it will not run. Checked to make sure was shut tight and if electricty was on,

My dishwasher will not start: Most common d/w power is 120 volts, check for 120 volts with a volt meter at the main power harness where it enters into the dishwasher, you will have to remove the lower access panels to get to the power box. Dishwashers also have at least one and most newer dishwashers have two door switches that must be checked. You will find then behind the console at the door latch area. Each manufacture has different designs.

The clean light is blinking diswasher won't start

Push these buttons in this order High temp wash > Heated dry>High temp wash >Heated dry all the lights will come on and this will reset the board and run it through a short test cycle but more than likely it will come up again,It's a failure in the heating cycle either the heater itself or the turbidity sensor which sits mounted up into the tub right behind the drain pump...hope this helps

Cleaning Cycle not Starting

Please provide the model number and the approximate age of the dishwasher.
If this diswasher uses a turning dial to select the cycle, which turns as the dishwasher progresses, I strongly suspect that this timer has failed and needs replacement. Especially since the soap door never opens. Does the dishwasher drain during and at the end of the full cycle?

Jennair dishwasher jdb8910aww

Start by puting timer in heat dry for about 4 seconds and see if element got warm. If so check you rinse aid and make sure it is full. I like the turbo dry made by jet dry. If it is empty, this is your problem. about the smell, you would use a cleaner such as diswasher magic made by GE. If element did not get warm, put unit on heat dry and and test voltage at the element. 120 volts present replace element. if not check voltage at thermal fuse for 120 volts. If no voltage there replace timer.

Humming noise

humming is the motor powered up but not turning. burning smell is the motor overheating. cause may be the motor capacitor which is a cheap part. try replecing it and hope thge motor survived. could also be a foreign object in the pump impellor
