GE diswasher hums but will not start cycle and starts to smell ho

My friend has a newer manufactured home with a GE dishwasher. I am not sure of the model. THe problem is that when you turn the dial, the dishwasher will hum, but will not start filling right away. You then get a hot smell and we turn it off. If you move the dial further into the cycle, then the dishwasher will start to fill, but nothing more happens. Where do I start? Could it be a bad switch or problem pump. My friends husband plays with something underneath and it starts working, but will only work once and it has to be done again.

- Vic, Thanks for your input, but the inlet valve is on.. Any other thoughts?

- No I am sorry, but I don't. After reading some other postings, I thought it might be the drain valve solenoid or the flood float. It also might be hard warter deposits locking up the motor so the humming is from the motor trying to turn. I am going to try to tap the flood float and then I am going to spin the motor. If neither of those work, I might try replacing the solenoid to see what happens. I just wanted to get a starting point. I did check all the connectors to make sure they were on tight and I even looked for a reset switch on the motor. Any other ideas that might help me? Thanks for your input so far!!!

- That is what I was afraid of... I will try to spin the motor to see if that works and maybe purchase a rebuild kit if they have one... Thanks for your help!!!

Hi, Have your freind check and see if the water supply line under the sink has been turned on. The hum you are hearing could be the inlet valve. Please let me know if this has been helpfull or if I can assist you further.

Thanks
Vic

- Ok, It must be a loose connection of some kind. Do you know what it is that he touches/moves in order for it to start?

- I am sorry, I miss read your first post and didn't see the part about it getting water. The older motors use to need started by hand at times when they would sit for any lenght of time between uses or the bearing starts getting tight. The drain solenoid will hum and there should be a click noise when it engages. If the motor has a cooling fan blade on the motor and that is what he moves to get it started, you will need to change the pump/motor assembly to fix it. There is no reset buttons on these motors. There is a new style designed motor/pump they put in them now.

- I am sorry but there are no rebuild kits either. That whole assembly need to be replaced. The cost is around $145.00
