What tools do I need to remove the hood on a Sanitaire SC684 vacuum. I need to replace the on/off switch. What type of tool or size do I need to remove the screw for the height knob.

I found out how to remove the hood. You need to remove the star screw from the height knob. Then remove the two Phillips screws on the bottom of the vacuum. The hood comes right off. The old switch will have a clip holding switch onto the vacuum. Remove clip and cut both the yellow and black wires for the switch. Install new switches wires to motor and then reclip in switch. Reinstall the hood screws and your done. The part number is 13738-5. I bought my new switch on ebay for about 10 dollars. This switch will work on Sanitaire 684f and 688a vacuums.

So I can remove the motor and purchase the correct driver, what type and size torx screw does it use?

Fran,
If I remember correctly, I believe you need a #20 Torx bit to remove and re-install those screws. You can usually find a kit that has multiple size bits in them at any hardware or tool store. You might even be able to get individual torx screwdrivers as well. Hope this helps!

Thanks to gbob59 for your response to my last question. I think the screw is a torx type screw & needs a special tool. Can anyone help me with the size of the tool?

You can buy a torx bit set fairly cheaply to fit most 1/4" screwdrivers with replaceable tips. If you only need the one size, take the iron to the store and they'll give you the correct on.

Brush stopped spinning

Hi Carla,
It is very likely that the rubber drive belt that connects the motor to the beater bar / brush has broken. This is especially true if you've had the vacuum for very long and never had to change it before. The good news is that this belt an inexpensive part and is replaced under normal usage as it is a wear and tear type item - not unlike brakes in a car.

Depending on the model vacuum you have, accessing the belt for replacement may require some simple tools. Most of the time a medium sized regular or Phillips screw driver is all that is needed to remove screws / pry the tool apart for access.

If you provide the manufacturer's name and model of the vacuum or attachment - I will be happy to get you more information on how to replace the belt.

What exactly is the name of the tool to remove the one screw on the handle of the Electrolux Renaissance C134A vacuum?

It's not a particular tool, it's simply a type of screwdriver bit. They are called either "Torx" or T-Star and come in a range of sizes, e.g. T15, T20, T25, T30, etc.

I think the one on your vacuum is a T20, but it's hard to remember the size of every screw on every appliance. I've attached a picture below to assist you. If this isn't the right tool, please describe the shape of the recess in the head of the screw and I will post back with the correct answer.

I have a Sanitaire model S663. It came with the 12" Vibragroom I aluminum roller brush E-53272. Is the Sanitaire Vibragroom II 12" steel roller brush E-53270 interchangeable?

If you go to this URL:

You will see both of the brush you mention. Compare what they show and if necessary, call the on line store for their input.

The power button quit working

Please click here to see the part diagram for the Hoover Windtunnel Self Propelled model U6446-900

Greetings from GoVacuum,

For replacing the switch, you need to remove the 2 screws that are in the back of the vacuum where the handle connects to the vacuum bag housing, Part # 50 on the first page of the diagram. After the screws have been removed, you may simply slide out the handle from the rest of the vacuum cleaner. You can then at this point view the outside of the switch, however as you'll find you can't replace it from this side. You'll then need to go into the where the tool caddy is in the front top part of the vacuum cleaner. Remove the attachments from the tool caddy, and then you'll need to remove the screws that hold the tool casing in place. Remove screws pictured # 35 on page 1, and the tool caddy is item # 17.

Once the screws and the tool caddy are removed, you may then see the rest of the switch, and the leads that connect to it. The easiest way to remove the screw is to use a flat head screwdriver and pry the switch out from the back of the vacuum cleaner after removing the leads from the switch. The new switch that you'll need to purchase is Hoover part number 28161067 which can be found online here: Hoover Windtunnel Main On / Off Switch Part Number 28161067.

I hope that this helps you replace the faulty switch in yours (and your parents) vacuum cleaners. If you need to place an order for the switch, please give us a call at 1-866-468-2288.

Thank you,
Chris Jones
