The unit is letting you know that the fan is dead or clogged. If you are out of warranty you can remove the cover and check to see if you need to clean or replace the fan. If you are still in warranty you should have your local Sony shop take care of it for you.

The fan shouldn't take too long to replace. The problem is that repair shops charge anything from $45 to $90 an hour for their repair work. I gather that you are out of warranty; therefore I would recommend you call around to as many Sony shops as you have available in your area to find out what they will charge for the service. You can also try out some non-Sony shops to see if they will do the repair, and what their price would be. Quite often the non-company specific shops will charge you less for the repair. You have to ensure that they do have access to the correct parts, and that they will give you some kind of warranty on the repair.

It's warning you that the fan is dead or clogged. Look at it and possibly clean out the dust bunnies.

This means that the unit detected a problem and shut itself down to prevent further damage. The normal cuase of this is a defective transistor in the final amplifier stage. Figure on $15-$35 for parts plus the local labor rate for the total repair.

Looking fot tech help

The clicking might have been the speaker relay attempting to engage. Measure any DC on the output transistors. You should see (B+/-,0.0 and +/- 0/6V). Anything else and the protection circuit will kick in. Update this with the measurements and we'll go from there. Note that this unmit may have darlingtons in it in which case the +/- 0.6 will be +/- 1.1
