If you have access to a second computer you can try installing the hard drive on it as a slave and then do a full virus scan. After this completes and hopefully removes all the virus's you might be able to put the drive back into the original computer and do a windows repair from the windows XP CD. If not then you would need to transfer the data off the old drive and reinstall windows from Scratch. I would recommend doing it that way if possible as it gives a better chance of not being reinfected by something on the drive.

The blue screen appers and then nothing but the splash screen loads

This means your never getting to the Operating system. Can you do any DOS hard drive diagnostics? I know a lot of my question depends on what kind of computer stuff you have from the past but many troubleshooting methods still attempt to see if hardware is working using Disk Operating System tools such as chkdsk and so.
If the DOS operating can not access the hard drive- it may not be spinning up or the boot sector may have been damaged by a trojan horse or virus. I have repaired the boot sector with a dos command before. There are many other issues that can also cause this it is not just one thing. It can be badly seated memory chips, capacitors on the motherboard that have puffed or leaked. I have even had a processor overheat due to fuzz and grease as it was used in the kitchen in the processor heat sink- cleaning is all it needed. If you can not get past the CMOS screen then that would point to a hardware problem. Just some thoughts- it probably needs to be seen by a good Computer Technician.

Two computers have the same IP address

On either computer:

Get a dos prompt, by clicking start, run and type in cmd.

In the dos window type in "ipconfig /release" then "ipconfig /flushdns" and finally "ipconfig /renew". This should give the computer a new IP address.

If these steps fail due to some error popping up, reboot the computer into Safe Mode with Network, If you are still having the IP issue, run the dos window again and try the same commands. Then reboot the computer back to normal windows.

Hope this helps

ACER ASPIRE 9410-4933 LAPTOP SCREEN GOES BLANK DURING P.O.S.T.

Were you working with laptop in battery mode, not plugged in a/c power? You could have drained your internal DC battery & at the same time damaged your B.I.O.S. [button type] battery inside the laptop. that the computer goes into POST means that it is trying to FIND itself, not finding the graphics card, it does not know what type of 'picture' ( usually black screen with ""DOS"" words ) to show you.
1st- turn laptop on, you should see name, what type of cpu (the "inner " workings of computer) and sometimes the amount of memory (clicking like a digital timer) If not, don't worry. Press f1,or DELETE, ESCAPE (ESC), or read your book to find the KEY to puts you into SETUP. There should be a menu and somewhere there are DEFAULT. USE THOSE! Reboot to see results.

My computer will not reboot

this will either relate to a hard disk fault or a corrupt driver or registry file, if you cannot get into safe mode, or last known good configuration, you may have to run a windows repair using your XP cd

Blue screen of death

You were on the right track by running recovery console. Try running fixboot and fixmbr like you did with chkdsk. These will attempt to repair the files that your system uses to boot the computer incase a virus happened to work it's way into one of those files.

Also, if you're able to get into Windows via Safe Mode, then you can change a setting so that the Blue Screen will not go away and you can copy the informaiton it contains, which will be very helpful.

To keep the blue screen by disabling automatic reboot:

Right click My Computer and go to properties. Go to the Advanced tab and under Startup and Recovery go to settings. Under system failure uncheck Automatically Restart.

Olevia 26" Flat Screen

I too had a similar problem with my 26" Olevia LCD TV, except it would flicker at different frequencies like a strobe light.  The flicker would even increase in speed, giving the visual illusion that the TV was about to blow up.  After several power-on, power-off, unplug, repeat, I was about to give up and think about looking for another TV. I saw your posts here and both of you "hit" the TV and it seemed to fix it, right?  Same here -- I gave the TV several good lateral "whacks" upon the outer edges of the unit!  The whacks weren't violent, just slightly "jarring" and after that, the TV stopped the flickering.  As you've said, it is quite juvenile to go beating on electronics, but interestingly enough, this method of "fixing" the electronics does at least seem to have an effect if done correctly.
I do also note that I went into the TV's menus and intentionally set the "Back Light" setting to "Dark" and "DNR" to "Low" to perhaps attempt to lesser drive the back light.  Since the beatings and then the much more rational idea of changing the menu options, the TV has worked, at least for a while now, relatively well.
