Point the remote at the lens on your cell phone camera. Watch as you press a button if you see a flashing light in the camera. If you do, then the trouble is in the equipment you are operating with it. If you don't see a light, then the remote is dead.
Check the remote control for its infrared emission. Check it with fresh batteries. Check it by pressing all the keys. You can detect the presence of infra-red emission from the remote control, using a cell-phone camera. If you wish to get more details about how to check a remote control, please visit this site. If what I am seeing is correct, the LG Magic remote is a remote with a lot more features, and a lot more power demanding features than a regular remote control.
Set-up (Programming) procedure is too much to type in here, and is not practical and it will differ brand-to-brand remote controls. If you wish to get more; check the site linked here. It has set-up code list & set-up procedure to many popular brand remote controls. See it in "Mosaic" or "Magazine" view. remove your remotes batteries then place the remote on a flat surface and put a book on top of it so at least one of the buttons is pushed and wait overnight (minimum of 4 hours) then remove the book and replace the batteries and reprogram it. This remote has a very large Capacitor (almost like a battery backup that takes a lot to drain the power from and the 4 hour wait wit a button pushed will drain it to zero, it will quickly regain a charge when you replace the batteries.
