1 Answer

Ethernet port I have a dell Demenion 4600. I have dsl and the motem lights ethernet and internet does not light up.It just stopped working. I checked with Verizon and they said it is my ethernet port. They said it might be my ethernet cable , O bought one and still it is the I got my mothers motem and connected it to try it and the motem lights(power, dsl, internet and ethernet) came on after sometime. So I thought I could go to the internet and try,but it would not come up. So I tried my email and that opened but took along time just to receive 9 out 56 emails, then it would not download the other 45 emails.I checked to see if I had a virus and there was none to be found, files were ok.

Have you reset your modem? Have you tried another rj45 cable? Have you open your Device Manager to get to your NIC's properties and verify that is working?

So you have Verizon DSL and the modem that they provided you is not lighting up. They said it's either your ethernet port or cable and you replaced the cable and still nothing. You took your Mom's modem and connected it and it came up eventually and you could get online, but it was unbearably slow. That about right?

Is it possible to connect a standard DSL modem - without Wi-Fi (with 1 Ethernet port) and a DSL modem - Wi-Fi (with 4 Ethernet port) to broadcast Wi-Fi singles

Does the non wifi modem give out DHCP addresses?
Can the wifi modem be set up to receive it's IP address from DHCP?
If the answer to both these questions is Yes then that's what to do as a first step. Make sure the wifi modem DHCP service is disabled as it must NOT give out DHCP addresses.
Connect the ethernet port of the non wifi modem to one of the LAN ports of the wifi modem and NOT the DSL/WAN port. The wifi modem is not participating in any DSL connectivity at all so it's DSL light will remain off. The non wifi modem is doing the DSL duty so it's DSL light should be correctly illuminated.

Cannot connect to web.

Follow this steps
1. Connect the provided power adapter from the gateway's POWER port to an electrical outlet. The POWER light on the front of the gateway should be green. 2. Connect the provided gray phone cable from the gateway's PHONE LINE port to the DSL filter jack labeled DSL/HPNA. 3. Connect the yellow Ethernet cable provided with the gateway from the LOCAL ETHERNET port on the gateway to your computer's Ethernet port
With your computer completely started, verify the POWER and ETHERNET indicator lights on the front of the 2Wire gateway are green. If they are not, see "Understanding the Indicator Lights" on page 15. The INTERNET indicator light will not turn green until the gateway software has been installed and an Internet connection has been established.

Followed all the set up steps but my DSL light would not stay on

  • 1 Plug the Ethernet cable into the Internet port on your wall. If you do not have Internet ports installed in your home, connect a phone line adapter to a phone line jack. The adapter makes the phone line wider so Ethernet cables can connect to it. This does not block your phone from use.
  • 2 Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into the Internet port on the back side of the Netgear DSL modem.
  • 3 Connect the Netgear DSL modem to a local power source. The power plug inserts into the modem via a small port on the rear of the modem.
  • 4 Insert a second Ethernet cable into one of the numbered ports on the back of the modem. Run the cable to your computer and plug it into the Ethernet port on the computer.
  • 5 Look on the back end of the DSL modem for an HTTP: address. Type this into your Internet browser's search bar. The Netgear DSL modem menu appears on the screen.
  • 6 Select how many computers are to use the modem, if you are using it with other DSL modems and set up a password (the default username and password is "admin"). Click "OK" to initiate the changes you made to the menu. You can now use your Netgear DSL modem to connect to the Internet.

I think you just need to install the right drivers for the hardware:

No, you don't need a card, as long as you have an Ethernet to USB adapter, you should be just fine.
