Pamela, try the battery trick again (here it is, along with other's similar experience and tips). But after you get it working, take lots of pictures before putting it away again (take a couple hundred of nothing in particular. Just erase them later. After all it's a digital). You want to really work the shutter mechanism to get out any grit or material that might be in there causing it to stick.
