Toro 6.5 self propelled Mower - Self Propell won't engage

When I engage the Self-Propell, it rumbles and the wheels only move slightly then stop, I removed the wheel thinking maybe it stripped the inner gears on the wheel but they are not stripped, I made sure the cord was tight and when I pull it, it tightens the belt around the mower blad shaft, do you think it could be the actual gearbox? What other troubleshooting steps can I take?

The lever works fine, when I pull it, the belt on the blade shaft tightens.

See if the lever going to the gearbox is cracked or broken. there is a gear inside the box that has a pin going thru the shaft that may have broken but usually it is external. these mowers have a plastic lever to put the transmission lever in gear if the cable is overtightened they wont hold up.if it cracks it leaves practially no tension on the engagment system

you are looking on the wrong end of the cable. not the handle the lever on the transmission is the one i am talking aboutthe outer part of the cable goes thru it before going thru the deck.if the plastic levercracks you wont get the wheels to turn thru the transmission.

Self propelled #860. self propell got slower and slower. now barely assists. can I adjust the belt. manuual says bring it in. too far. how do I tighten? thx, bruce

Hello,

Your self propell is not adjustable. The belt runs over a spring tensioner, you either need a new belt or axle bushings. If you pull the top cover off, you can watch the belt when you engage it. With the engine off, can you move the front wheels up or down or forward or backward? If so the plastic bushings are worn out and this changes the geometry of the drive system, making the belt appear too long.

Hope this was helpfull, Matt

Self Propell Does not work?

The first thing I would check is remove the drive wheels and check to see if they are stripped out. Replace if nec. Also check to see if any linkage is defective, missing or what ever. If it has a belt check it, replace if nec. Once you get the cover off try engaging the self propel and see if things are working like they should.

Good luck

Front ppropelled mower

You dont adjust the belt, you adjust the cable that moves the pulley into the belt. There will be a small single bracket close to the engine side of the mower that holds the cable in place. Simply loosen bracket and move cable until pulley contacts belt enough to engage self propel.

6.5 toro walk behind self propell b&s engine. self propel does not work

Try adjusting your self propel cable. A slight extension of the cable (1/4 inch) will double speed, so do a little at a time. Take the back guard off and clean debris 2 or 3 screws and it is just a cover so nothing will pop out unless that is your real problem. You should have grease fittings behind rear wheels so squirt 2 times with grease gun in each wheel and 1 squirt every 3rd mow.

SELF PROPELL NOT WORKING GOOD

Have you checked the belt that drives the wheel? This is more than likely the problem. It may be broken.

Toro 20016 self propel

If you take the wheels off and remove the belt from the small pulley on the the front axle underneath the pulley you should see a small transmission. You usually can split this unit in half . You will see two gears and sometimes one plastic and one metal. The plastic one is usually the culprit. Hope this will help you out. Donnyb60
