Question about Office Equipment & Supplies

1 Answer

I installed a Maxtor One Touch 4 Plus external 500GB about a month ago. Two weeks later when I tried to access the drive thru Windows Explorer, Windows said "drive is not formatted". I thought maybe I did something wrong, so I went ahead and reformatted the drive. The drive worked fine for several more weeks; now it windows says the same thing. My computer is Windows XP. One other thing - when I pull up the Maxtor manager sw that was supplied with the drive, it recognizes the drive, but the writing is in Japanese or Korean characters. Please help. Thanks spriest@hhwifi.com

The solution helped me to restore the drive without having to re-format and thus lose my data. The act of installing the Central Axis SW was all that was needed. It also opened some new options for me to to use in the future.

    Thanks. Steve

Ok, Windows only provides the NTFS format option because it can't format FAT32 for drives over 32 GB which yours surely is.

Attach the drive to your Windows machine again and just delete the partition and don't create a new one. Then try the Central Axis Format, which I think uses EXT3.

The advantages of EXT3 are that the backup will probably be faster and you will be able to back up files larger than 2 GB. You can use this (http://www.fs-driver.org/)to provide EXT2/3 read/write in Windows.

The advantage of FAT32 is that you can move the drive back to any Windows system to read the backup drive if you ever need to. But you can't copy files over 2 GB.

If that doesn't work, you can try this (http://www.pendrivelinux.com/large-external-usb-hard-drive-fat32-format-utility/)or this (http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=197)utility to format the USB drive in FAT32. But, again, you won't be able to copy files over 2 GB.

I just wouldn't use the Maxtor manger, use the web interface, either you have a non-english version showing up from having the wrong software on it (company mistake) or the maxtor manger isn't being read right by the computer because of a bad file which I wouldn't worry too much about. I hope this helps, let me know how it turns out.

My Maxtor One Touch can not be accessed. My computer just lost any Maxtor software.

SEATOOLS should be able to help. Give that a try first!

You shouldn't need the management software, but if you do, you can call seagate and get the maxtor software again if you need it.

After windows re-install, locked out of Maxtor drive

Hi,

Sounds like you're on the right track, but you don't need to buy another drive to get the software. Go to the link below and find the download for your drive in the list.

The software downloads are a free form of support from Maxtor.

http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/

If you have trouble or this doesn't work then post back here and I'll see what else we can do to help.

Old Maxtor/New Maxtor

If files you are trying to restore are encrypted you will have to use same software to retrieve them.. If not, any file in the external hard drive should be viewable with your windows explorer.

And U do not need drivers for external hard drives. They just plug into your usb port and work with modern OS after the unit is recognized.
