You should put new batteries in the remote. If that does not solve the problem get a new remote. Many people like the universal remotes available at radio shack or walmart.

Maybe the remote got dropped by the cleaners. If you could control volume with the remote previously and now can't, I suspect the remote needs to be replaced.

you can start with opening the remote control and clean the buttons on your remote control. don't use any aceton based products. there can be some grease on the buttons.
if you used the on/off and volume more then the other buttons.

Remote control not communicating with recorder unit


The remote is the problem, the pads are well worn. But you may be able to restore device by taking it apart, remove batteries and screws if any. Most remotes are clipped together, take a flat head screwdriver and wedge between the 2 halfs, push and slowly twist until clips give, some will break while you are working them apart. Remove rubber pad and soak in wam soapy water overnight and wash, clean printed circuit board with rubbing alcohol several times removing pad marks, and allow 1 hour to dry and assemble remote. This may work, long shot.

This is a code for other models but it works on about half a doz Tosh models.
It may work, i cant test it out for you so, its up to you if you want to try it will either work or not.

1. Press the Open button on your remote control to open the drive tray 2. Press the 2 button on your remote control 3. Press the 4 button on your remote control 4. Press the 0 button on your remote control 5. Press the 3 button on your remote control 6. Press the 9 button on your remote control 7. Press the 6 button on your remote control 8. Press the 0 button on your remote control 9. Press the Enter button on your remote control to change the region to 1 for region 1, 2 for region 2, and so on, or 9 for multi-region playback 10. Press the Open button on your remote control to close the drive tray 11. Power off the DVD player 12. Power on the DVD player

You should be able to get into the inputs by going to channel 2 then hit the down button and it should go to the other inputs, keep clicking the down button tell you get to where you want to be...this may not work but about half the time it does.
