The yellow is the permanent live (memory) wire, red to ignition and black to ground.

Most stereo manufacturers agreed on a color-coding scheme for their wiring to keep things consistent. In that scheme, red wires are run to power (ie, the battery) and serve as the ignition-switched power leads (so when the engine is shut off, the head unit also shuts off), black wires are grounds, and purple, gray, green, and white are used for the main four speakers. Blue is an antenna and/or amplifier turn-on wire. Orange is a dimmer wire (for cars with dimmers on the dash lights, this can be tapped in to also dim the head unit's lighting). Yellow wires are typically the memory wires. These feed power to the head unit constantly, regardless of whether the car is on or not, so that memory presets and tone settings are maintained. Your JVC unit should have a yellow wire coming off the back as part of the harness - this would be the one to supply power. You can run this directly to the battery - that way if you blow the fuse in the fuse box that you're considering using, you won't lose your stereo settings as well as whatever feature the fuse was utilized to protect.

Have you checked that the wire you are connecting to is constant 12 volts and not switched, and that any inline fuse is still good? Unless there is something wrong with the radio, the memory should work if you have the constant supply connected.
This site may be helpful with wire colors if your model car is listed.

Do not cut the wires from the car. Instead, call Crutchfield at 888-955-6000 and order the adapter part number 120701003. When you call them, ask for color coding. For JVC, refer to the attached picture. Match the adapter color code with that of JVC. If the adapter color code is the same, then connect ground (black), battery (yellow), and wire from ignition switch (red) securely. Turn on the car and see the radio works. If it works, connect one by one speakers and confirm. Remember, perfect connection gives reliable installation.
