Above the top row of keys are words that indicate the code or alt function of these keys. By using the alt or code key and this key you should be able to turn on or off these functions.
Goto BROTHER.com, click on support, poke around and you will find a manual.
The code key works with all the keys in the top row to set up those functions, bold, underlind, KDII, etc. The function allows you to type on the display befor printing.
Without having the operator manual what I recall on these types of type writers, they have a key next to the space bar called "Features Key."
Most keys are color labeled.
Select the bold feature, it's color origin,
1. Press and hold that features key
2. Touch the bold key, now you are in bold typing mode.
3. When you finish bold typing, press the features key and hold, then touch the bold to turn it off.
there is a key that has BOLD printed under the letter on the key, or it may be printed above the top keys on the keyboard, hold down the code key and hit the key under where it says BOLD, or the key that has it on it. to take it off, do the same thing
