According to the service manual for the TRC-447, the only adjustment is for "power" which is #L205. The only other step in the transmitter alignment is for the "S" meter.
On the Cobra, VR4 is AMC, L14,L13,L12 is AM power.

SOURCE: Cobra 29LTD CHROME low tx no mod, rx good low Vol, talkback good

1 why would you change the finals?? Have you checked you antenna? How are your SWR's? Crappy antenna's cause a lot of problems.

Use an external meter to see what the SWR is, and see what the output is PEP. If its low, then there is something wrong. If it is High, change the mic and turn up the dynamic all the way.

Next. Have you been messing around in there?? Tryin to get more wattage? You turned VR4? If you thought you were turning it up by turning it all the way to the right, you turned it all the way down. Turn it all the way to the left.

SOURCE: i want talkback on my cobra 29ltd classic radio

Open the case on your radio. Solder a 100 ohm resistor between the pa jack and ext speaker jack. You can add a switch if you like to turn it on and off. The lower the resistance, the louder the talkback.

SOURCE: Cobra 25 no receive & no modulation

Hello 49er, When you say "no receive", do you mean no sound, or no signal on the meter at all??I'm just grabbing at straws here so bear with me as there can be different problems doing the same thing.If this radio has been tightened up in a bracket, sometimes that will pull the solder legs loose on the audio chip. That could take away the mod. and RX volume. Is the Microphone ok? If the radio has been in storage, the switches and knobs could have dust and dirt in them. How much troubleshooting are you comfortable with?? If your not, then you might need to take it to a good CB Radio Repair shop to have it serviced. That's what I used to do for over 10 years,,, Let me know how your coming along,,, Mechanic

How do turn a stock one up? cobra 29ltd and a night watch 25

We all know one is not "supposed" to up the power on a standard CB to more than 4 puny watts...lol. Get your favorite local technician to do a good combination of power/modulation final tuning. Excellent modulation is what really makes the difference, along with a strong power mike. Cobras are known for good quality modulation! Thanks, Bill

New Cobra 29 ltd

Hi,

Appreciate the direct "Ask Me". If I may clear up your concern:
  • you have two CB radios, one is a Cobra 29LTD and the other?
  • both have received and both do not transmit;
  • you have two trucks, one with a Firecracker 1000 antenna, and the other?
In any case and initially, TX (transmit problems) could be caused by:
  • defective PTT/mic;
  • defective finals/drivers;
  • defective PL-259 connector/RG58 Cable;
  • antenna grounding/SWR;
  • other electronics internally
Please check the above. You may need an SWR meter, a watt meter and a DVM/VOM to perform the tests.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

Cobra 29 Ltd Classic

In most cases just turning up VR4 is more then enough. Replacing the final, tr14 with another transistor requires changing many more parts to get it to work.

With a new 29, there is no need to change the final. Just turn vr4 all the way up and you will see around 20 - 25 watts. L13 won't gain you a single watt. L12 will raise the dead key, and usually you want a lower dead key for good swing. L14 will gain you a few watts, but don't adjust this unless you have a watt meter. You turn it out to increase wattage, but too much will over bias the final and shorten its life.

You hook it to a watt meter with a dummy load. Then say a steady AHHHH into the mic while keyed. Turn the slug out until the needle stops going up, then back it down to where it stopped.

The easy thing to do, and you will be pleased is just to turn VR4 up. Now, Up is counter clockwise. Its a variable resistor, so the less resistance, the more modulation. So you want to turn the VR down.

that will be more then enough.
