Bernice, could be dead battery, faulty fuse,solenoid or starter.
Have a technician check/diagnose and give estimate of repair.

check for bad battery connections or bad ground
could be a dead battery and you were running on the output from the alternator

Key turns to "start" position. Nothing happens, key doesn't spring back to "run".

Sounds like the link between the lock cylinder and the switch is broke.

Will not start repalaced ingnition switch and altnator still nothing.. lights work just nothing when you turn the key . also notice the trunk button doesnt work either not sure if related... 2005 grand am

CHECK FOR VOLTAGE AT STARTER ON SMALL WIRE IF VOLTAGE THERE WITH KEY IN START POSITION BAD STARTER.

Car won't turn over

Neutral safety switch may be going bad or is out of adjustment. Switch is on the transmission under the shift linkage ear where shift cable attaches. Loosen it and put car in reverse (not running) turn switch so that reverse lights come on. semi-tighten switch and check that it starts in both park and neutral. If not you need to change the switch.
