Drum paddles keep falling out (Hotpoint BWD129 washer/dryer)

I bought genuine replacement drum paddles (Hotpoint BWD129) washer/dryer and they were easy to install. TOO easy perhaps? All three of them keep falling out during even light washing loads, or during tumble drying cycles. Obviously this leads to imbalance and noise, and less effective washing/drying. Is there a basic design defect? How can I stop them from falling out?

    Thanks Barkencoa.

    (1) I didn't know that there were three versions, and the wesbite from which i bought the parts didn't mention that either. I guess that they would need to know the serial number to provide the correct version?

    (2) On the other hand, the ones that they sent do look identical to the ones that came out (due to broken lugs - I think the tenants had tried washing trainers in it).

    (3) The six slots in each paddle position have a wide end, into which you present the paddle and its six lugs. Then you slide the paddle towards the back of the drum, along the narrow part of the slot, which is about 15-20 mm deep. It cannot go any further than that withpout slicing off the plastic lugs on the steel drum.

    (4) The paddles slide firmly across the full length of those slots, but do not seem to "lock" into position - no click or change in resistance, only a stop at the end of the slot.

Q1: Should I try to push them even further along the slots? I fear slicing the lugs off.

Q2: Should I try bending the steel next to the slots to make it tighter somehow?

    Many thanks!

Sorry barkencoa, but this machine does appear to have only one version of paddle:http://shop.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/Washing+M... although that same website also has a diagram to explain the three versions that you refer to, but my machine is not listed for any of those, and all three look diffrent to the paddles that I am replacing.

Hi fixer_muppet, yes, that was the solution that I ended up trying and it did work.

But I am now worried that you give that solution only six months' life (it has now been about 9 months, so it's overdue to fail again!) :-)

  • Richie Sep 09, 2010

Hi, you don't need to bend them up by much - just a little bit (2-3 mm?) on the corner nearest the machine door, using a pair of pliers. Then place the new paddle with all six lugs over the six holes, push down on the paddle so that all six lugs go into the holes, and then (keep pushing down on the paddle) slide the paddle towards the back of the machine (it should only slide in by about 10mm = the length of the tabs/slots. That's it! They shouldn't come out again. If you cannot get the paddle to slide backwards into the drum, then you may have bent the tabs too far up. Try a little bit first! Good luck!

I had this problem, and I was advised by the guy who has apparently 'replaced hundreds of these bloody things on this housing estate' to never buy this machine because 'its cheap and ****'

However, if you bend the long central tab ,the one that looks like it does bugger all, upwards into the drum (carefully though, only bend it a little) this will increase the tab tension, and your lifters should last for over six months instead of the previous couple of washes mine was doing.
As for the comment on washing trainers, I put a single towel in my machine and the lifters broke...

A broken agitator paddle can cause your clothesto tear. Don't let this happen when replacing one is relatively simple.
The plastic paddles in the drum on the later washing machines (WMA models) often come looseand come off altogether. They can be replaced. call them lifters. You usually insert a smallscrewdriver down one of the holes (it's the 3rd one on ) and gently press downwhile sliding the lifter out.

First of all, have you got the correct drum lifters? There are 3 versions of these available, assuming you have, then you must not be fitting them correctly,, you have to push them quite hard to ensure that they are locked into position, if they are not in o properly, then they will come out.
Please rate my solution.
Thanks.

I have a similar Hotpoint model to this, that does something very similar now and again, usually when trying to set a delayed start.

The only way I have found to "fix" it is to turn the machine off for at least 5 minutes, and then try again.

Hope this helps.

Are you sure you have got the correct paddle, as there is more than one version, and also there is a right and wrong way to fit them.
Make sure you push it hard into the locating slots, you should feel it click into place, to be sure it is located properly, lightly pull it, and it should remain in position.
Hope this helps.
