Just use any unformatted 40gb IDE disk (if you can find one for sale). The machine has a format function built in to the maintenance menu.

Try a low level format. There is a strong possibility that your hard disk will no longer be able to perform normally even after a low level reformatting. Looks like a new hard disk is the answer.

Thinkpad T42 Hard Disk problem

Hello.

It seems the hard disk size will max out at 80GB with a 5,400 RPM speed according to IBM.

Im sorry to say that this means that it will not support a 120Gb hard drive.

Hard Disk Upgrade

I don't know if you can call this a solution but I hope this points you in the right direction...

I personally trust WD over Seagate. Their external drives work like a dream. As for the size you wish to go with, well that is up to you. It really depends on how much you are willing to spend. Sometimes its cheaper to get the bigger size than to get the smaller one and spend more when you fill up what you have. I managed to buy a 500GB HD from Fry's for $130. Before I stray away from the issue, I would choose a WD drive, 320 over 250 GB, and I would get a friend who knows a thing or two about removing a hd from a computer so you can take it with you (just to make sure you get set up with a hd that is compatible).

Other factors that you may run into are RPM speeds. I believe they are 5400 and 7200. The faster it is then the faster things load. I also believe that the faster it is, the hotter it will get and the more power it will require. If you are concerned with getting a bigger hd then stick with what you know works, that being a 5400 rpm drive.

If you are really picky about things, I suggest going to cnet.com and reading reviews on the hd's before buying. Their reviews are very useful, they list user reviews, will compare prices with other vendors who sell the hd being reviewed and tell you if its priced according to performance or overpriced compared to similar models.

Hope that helps...

SEAGATE HARD DISK DRIVE PROBLEM...

Hi,

I am venturing a guess, but it could possibly be your memory and not your hard drive.

Additionally, you can partition and format the 40Gb HD in a second PC using a third party utility such as Partition Magic which would also allow you to verify the integrity of the hard drive

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

How to install seagate ata IV hardrive

Hi,

The easiest way to upgrade from your old HD to the new 40Gb HD is to clone the old to the new. Do a google for "hard disk clone" freewares. Personally I use Partition Magic and have had very good results.

Hardware wise, you need to install the 40Gb as a slave to the old HD by connecting the same IDE cable as that of the old HD (you may have to remove your CD/DVD temporarily). You also have to temporarily remove the single jumper of the 40Gb to allocate it as a slave to the primary master (old HD). Plug in likewise the 4 wire power connector. On power up go to your CMOS/BIOS setup to verify that your PC autodetect the 40GB (you may have to do a manual detection). Boot your PC and go through the normal boot sequence. Thereafter download your clone software choice, install and run. Follow on screen instructions. You may need to reboot. After completion, use Windows Explorer to verify that everything has been copied. Power down, remove the old HD, relocate IDE cable connector of the old HD to the 40Gb, reconnect your CD/DVD, and place back the jumper of the 40Gb. On popwer up go again to your CMOS/BIOS to verify that the 40Gb & the CD are detected. Save & exit, reboot.

Hope this be of help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

XBOX HD DEAD

Sadly I don't think there is a solution, as you noted the HD is locked into the motherboard. You will have to buy a modchip to be able to upgrade/replace the disk. You are probably better off just getting a used Xbox, I bet they can be had at similiar price ranges. Check Gamestop or Ebay for used Xbox consoles.
