Still have the receipt? Take it back to the store and exchange it for another one. Easiest and quickest solution.
Otherwise, you can unplug the power from the radio and take the top cover off and check at the channel selector module to see if there's a broken wire or a broken solder joint. If the radio received rough treatment during some point in shipping (the outside packaging box may show no signs if it) it could be just a bad connection.
With the top cover off, replug the power and turn on the radio. BE CAREFUL IN HERE, THOUGH!! With a pair of insulated needle nose pliers, gently move the wires that connect to the channel selector module and see if it will light up. If so, disconnect the power and re-solder the joint or replace the broken wire. Reinstall the cover and reconnect the power, you should be good to go.
WARNING...if you open the cover on the radio, you cannot return it. Do this only as a last resort, if you can't return it for an even exchange for the same model radio.

I have a GX1255S (black) that has a blown voice chip. Everything else works fine. Sounds like you might have a stuck up or down button on top of your mic. If you would like me to send the whole radio to you, I will. You can reimburse me for shipping and a few bucks for my troubles if it works for you to switch the mic or put some of your guts into this radio. Just a thought.
