(Driver) Sony VAIO VGN-AR71M + NVIDIA geForce 8400M GT + XPdowngr

Dear friends
I'm the proud owner of a Sony VAIO VGN-AR71M, but a frustrated user of Windows Vista (its default OS and apparently the only OS supported by Sony on their site for this model). So I've decided to downgrade it to XP64bit. Everything went smooth, except for the part of the NVIDIA driver. I got stuck on it. Does anyone know where to find XP64bit drivers for NVIDIA geForce 8400M GT ? Or a way of tweaking existing drivers or .INFs so that XP64 accepts them?
(Which driver installer and modified .INFs should I use?)
Your help is valuable and most welcome.
Kind Regards,
opusensemble

    Hello coolguy008,

Tried your instructions, but got the error message at installation:

"The NVIDIA Setup Program could not locate any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit"

    http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/6289/di...

By installing a hardware information utility I get no info regarding the NVIDIA card:

    http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/231/d...

    http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/1107/ds...

    http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/3329/ds...

However when having the Vista OS installed (as shipped by default by Sony) it was detected with respective drivers installed, which means that the hardware is there but is not being detected by this hardware info utility running over XP64.

I had tried your solution before which unfortunately did not work,

Do you have any further hints?

I've tested your solution but it did not work.
When installing it I get this message:

I've used an hardware information utility on XP64 which does detect the NVIDIA card:

    although it's there: http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/3379/ds...

    Hello hmerchant110,

I appreciate your answer but it does not solve my problem.

I could have installed Windows 7 but that brings me a licensing issue at this stage and I'll need to reinstall it in all my machines (I have 4 vaio VGN-AR71M laptops as these) before the license expires.

Moreover Microsoft strongly recommends that the Windows 7 RC is not used as main operating system but in a test machine, and having a RC temporary solution does not fit my needs.

I've heard that is possible to tweak configurations through the use of modded .INFs (like in www.laptopvideo2go.com or in www.rivatuner.com ) so that the OS thinks that it has a different card and drivers go well on it.

I have tried the modded .INFs I've found until know without success, so I am asking for the help of a modding/overclocking specialist who knows how to tweak it.

Looking forward for hearing from experts

  • opusensemble Jul 17, 2009

Meanwhile, tried to do it manually, but still no luck

Although the video card string is shown: http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/6250/di...

I get the message that XP is not supported http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/4546/di...

(which is odd as I've used the modded inf for the XP 64bit driver)

    Any clues?

    Hello ginko,

I appologize if you were locked in my previous reply.

I don't know very well how to use this fixya system yet, and I honestly don't like the options of accepting and refusing experts. This should be oriented to accepting or refusing solutions, not experts.

I appologize if I had clicked the wrong option, I was not aware that you would be blocked for further iterations if doing so. Apparently by adding this comment you'll be able to post solutions again.

I'm of course interested in proceeding,

    P.S.

The driver and modded file I used were taken from here (190.15_winxp64 + the modded .INF):

    http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/drivers/xp...

    http://download.laptopvideo2go.com/nvidi...

    http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/infs/190se...

Although the installation process does not show me any error, I get this message in the end, and no driver is installed.

It is not that easy.
This laptop has a NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT - 256 MB graphic card.
The right driver is available from Nvidia website here, but it probably won't install on your laptop without modifying the setup files. Drivers installers are customized , and the inf file must be modifyied to get the installer working.
The other alternative is forcing the laptop to use the driver, when installing the driver from device manager, chosing update driver, then "I will chose the driver". This last procedure may not work.
Try first downloading the driver from NVidia, it may not work.
In that case go to the installer files for the driver , find the inf file, and open it in notepad to mod it. Here parameters and instructions to modify the file.

Let me know how it goes.

Since you refused my solution I won't be able to assist you anymore, your thread will be locked to another expert.

The problem is fixable since drivers are available from Nvidia, all I needed were the printout of the inf file.

Now I won't be able to follow up.

Refusing for no reason is not a good choice in here.

    Good luck.

    Hi Opus,

I have your thread unlocked again, it will probably lock back after I answer.

Do not accept any solution until you fixed it, or you will close the thread (accept after fixed thnks).

Do not refuse an expert if it is not definitively unhelpful, or you cut them out, locking to a different experts.

Regarding the problem, the setup you have is not modded for your Vaio .

If you want to proceed using the forum you can get the modded inf file here.

LaptopVideo2Go_INF_files.zip , you need to log in first.

If that does not work, download the massive installer from NVidia at Nvidia website here,

then start driver setup, estracting all drivers at the location C:\NVIDIA\WinXP64\185.85\IS

    The installer will probably
refuse to proceed, stopping at some point because is not modded.

At that point you will have all drivers file extracted at C:\NVIDIA\WinXP64\185.85\IS

Go to device manager and update the driver manually.

Say that you want to install the software manually, that you have disk, and enter the specific location C:\NVIDIA\WinXP64\185.85\IS\Display .

    If the
8400M GT does not show, untick 'show compatible hardware'.

Try both ways, and let me know how it work, since drivers for
8400M GT on XP 64 are available, then there is surely a way to have it working.

    Suerte.

    G.

Hi,

The NVidia driver download page http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_notebook_winxp64_185.85_whql.html mentions at the bottom that the driver available for your geForce 8400 GT are not supported on Sony VIAO models.

So the best option would be to re-install vista and later on you can upgrade to Windows 7 operating system. Some manufacturers will be offering this update free of cost, so it will be worth waiting till the last quarter of this year. Windows 7 is much much improved and very fast (as per the reviews we get).

Also, you can make Vista faster by turning of services which you normally don't require.

Hope this solves your problem Thanks and all the best.

    Hi,

The final version of Windows 7 (not the RC version) will be out later this year and those who are using genuine Windows Vista will be upgraded free of cost or at a nominal charge by the respective manufacturers.

    Thanks for your patience.

This makes me think that there are problems with your VGA drivers. I tried to locate win7 drivers for your laptop but there are not available from Sony. Your vga model is nvidia geforce go 7400. Here is the official link to choose and download the drivers from nvidia's website. In case this doesn't work, try the following procedure:
1) Download the latest desktop driver for Windows 7 and the card that is closest to yours from NVIDIA's website.
2) Extract the installer to C:\NVIDIA - Close installer after extraction. It is not needed now any longer.
3) Find NV_DISP.inf and open it in notepad.
4) Look at the models of cards listed. Choose to edit one that is closest to yours.
5) Open device manager. Right click on standard vga or your video card and choose properties. Details tab. Change drop down to hardware ids. The second line down is of interest here.
6) In the .inf, scroll to the bottom [Strings] section. Again, look for most similar desktop model. Change the beginning part to match what you found in last step 5. For example:
NVIDIA_DEV.0421.01 = "NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT"
and you have 8400M GT, change it to
NVIDIA_DEV.0426.01 = "NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT"
7) Now look up higher in the .inf and search for the number you edited. In this case, "0421" will lead you to this line:
%NVIDIA_DEV.0421.01% = Section010, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0421
8) In this line, edit like this and add your particular string from step 5:
%NVIDIA_DEV.0426.01% = Section010, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0426&SUBSYS_9016104D
Note the changes made between step 7 and this in bold, underline, italic. Do similar for your particular hardware string.
9) Save the .inf (ctrl+s)
10) Right click on standard vga in device manager. Click update driver software. Browse my computer. Let me pick from a list. Have disk. Browse. Find the .inf you just edited and double click on it. Hit ok so it installs.
11) Reboot and rerun the .exe from step 1 until completion, to install the NVIDIA control panel.
In case you have Intel accelarator too, leave the Intel device alone.

In case of a problem or clarification, don't hesitate to post.

Thanks and regards

How to update my outdated video drive NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS/ In

Hello,

You should be able to get the latest driver through nVidia directly. If you go to the following link you can search for a driver from there: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

If you are not sure what series driver you need, choose the GRAPHICS DRIVER button in section #2. You may need to allow an add-on to install (click the colored bar a the top of the next window), but then you should see what the latest version driver is available for your system.

Hope this helps,

Chris

If worse comes to worse, you could always reinstall windows.
