Hi, it's normally F2. Sometimes F12.

Keep pressing F2 or F12 repeatedly as soon as you have pressed the power button on the PC, this may get you into the BIOS

Gateway MP8708 Won't boot past BIOS and won't boot into CD/USB/Safe Mode on XP - Blank screen with keyboard dead - Num locks on and wireless light

Somehow your MBR (Master Boot Record) likely got corrupted or possibly your hard drive went bad coincidentally.

Simply, you will start your computer from your Windows CD/DVD install disk, then when at a DOS prompt ( D:\ ) you will then type: FDISK /MBR (press enter).

Find your Operating System install DVD and start your computer with it, then follow instructions within this discussion:
Restore Windows XP MBR without Windows XP disc

Alternatively, review my search results for other instructions:
fdisk mbr windows xp Google Search

Windows won't start up? Well, try this Download Tenorshare Data Recovery from its offical site and install it. Burn it into CD/DVD, or USB flash, put into the computer you need to repair, Bios setting. It can make sure your important data will not lose. Best of luck

I locked my hardrive and cant get into it now.......how can i unlock it

Need more information. How did you lock it? In the BIOS?

Assuming you did this in the BIOS you will need to enter the BIOS by hitting F1, F2 or DEL while the computer is booting in BIOS. Sometimes you will see the BIOS key noted on the bottom of the Boot screen. On the first BIOS screen check to see if your HD is listed. If so go to the BOOT screen. On the BOOT screen check the boot order. To move the HD to the top click on the HD and click on the "+" key to move it up of select it if you get an options window. In the BOOT SETTINGS screen click on the HD to varify that the correct HD is listed. If more than one HD you can move the boot drive up by using the "+" key or options window. Check your other settings. When done hit ESC and go to the last screen and select to SAVE and Reboot.

If you locked yourself out at the Windows Password screen. If you are using Windows XP Home, reboot and hit F8, F10 or F12 during BIOS boot. Select SAFE MODE. When Windows open go to the Control Panel - Users and delete the users. This will remove the passwords. Close windows and reboot computer. Windows will now start and open without passwords. If you are using XP Pro you will need to take the computer to a Tech who will have a Password Disc to clear the passwords.

Have a friend that can't boot his computer to windows xp

Before trying to use any of Dell-net's suggestions, we've got to get you into the bios.

It looks generally like this:

You should see a message displayed when you start the computer that says press "Del or F2 or F10" to enter setup.

Once we get here, we can proceed.

Limited User access will not open files in software program

boot into safe mode on xp. when you start the computer and the bios screen comes up start tapping the F8 key. it should take you to the boot selection screen. press your arrow keys to get to the selection "Windows Safe Mode" and press enter. when xp loads the login screen, there should be an admin account now. use that account to set users access to admin rights.
if you dont want that user to have admin rights but still start software that requires admin rights, try this. right-click on the program. go to run as... and choose administrator.

please let me know if this helped you :)
