Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven
The power is on but when I start it it make a odd huming noice and doesnt heat anything. Can anyone let me know what the problem is.It was purchased 3 years ago and I havent replaced any part of the microwave...
It's probably a shorted high voltage rectifier diode or a bad magnetron or both.
It's within the magnetron warranty, so you only be liable for the labor, unless you or a friend do it yourself.
There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components, and also has safety warnings.
At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.
You can also find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number from the tag on the oven here.
The high voltage diode can be checked with a meter to see if it's shorted. See: http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/diode.html (and see the safety warnings there)
If the diode is not shorted, you can check the magnetron:
(and see the safety warnings there)
Accessing some components (especially the oven cavity thermostat) for testing and possible replacement will require you to remove the oven from the wall and take off the outer cover.
If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.
You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.
If the magnetron is bad, GE will send you the magnetron to do it yourself. Call them at 888-239-6832.
Be persistent. You may have to speak with a supervisor.
If nothing else, you can save about $75 by taking it to the shop yourself.
