Hi

I now know the reason for problem. It is in fact a design problem by HP. They have not protected the laser scanner unit properly. Toner powder can get into the laser unit. To cure the problem you have to strip down some of the printer. First remove the toners, Remove the back cover remove two PCB under the rear cover, then remove the supporting metal panel. Then removing the laser unit. There are two small spring metal cover plates that have to be removed to get the bottom two screws of the laser unit. Best to the lean the printer on its front as these plates are on the bottom of the printer.

When you have got that far, you have to remove a small spring and then undo just one screw that holds the laser unit plastic front cover.

When this cover is removed you can see the fancy optics of the laser unit. You will find a covering of toner dust all over, the angled mirrors and lenses. The bottom angled mirror having the most toner dust this is the magents mirror.

I used a camera lens cleaning brush to remove all of the toner dust. Shining a small tourch around will high lite the dust on the various parts.

When this is done then you have to re-assemble it all.

If everthing has been done correctly then you are back in business.

When printing, the top half of page prints normal... bottom half of page very faint...

Your ink cartridge has about 9 very small nozzles that spray ink to complete a letter the upper nozzles complete the upper half and the lower half is done by the lower nozzles. The lower nozzles are stopped or clogged up by dried up ink or the control resisters in the firing circuit are burned out. some times you can unclog the nozzles by soaking the lower part of the cartridge in hot water for a half hour and drying it well ,replace it in the carrier and try it again. However you will lose a lot of ink and it may be more prudent to replace the cartridge.

For some time now anything red fails to print properly (it is very faint and inconsistent across the page). I have tried replacing the magenta cartridge but it makes no difference.

This is a known problem with this machine. The cooling fan is located next to the magenta scanner at the base of the machine. It needs to be disasembled and the magenta scanner lenses need cleaned. This is a pain to do put if you take to a local repair shop they should be able to take care of it in less then an hour. (If they know what they are doing)

The lt magenta and magenta just quit printing between pages

1. Check if the cartriges are correctly installed:
Installing the Ink Cartridges

2. Print a diagnostic page and clean print heads, using the printer cleaning utility:
Color Mix or Missing Colors on the Diagnostic Page
Repeat if needed.

3. If this still doesn´t solve you problem, try resetting the printer and manually cleaning the cartrigdes as advised in this FAQ:

MAGENTA NOT PRINTING

The other week I had the black print head clog up, requiring daily nozzle deep cleaning [a normal 'ocassional' maintenance function]. Thought I needed a new Print head, so anything worth a try.
I loaded up an old black cartridge [I load all my own......always have] with Isopropyl Alcohol and ran deep clean on that cartridge a couple of times, then repeat printed [6 times] a page full of the number 8 in about half inch character size, to get the alcohol through the nozzles. then Deep cleaned again 3 times, to wash it through the print head.

I reloaded the normal ink filled cartridge and ran the '8' page again till I got good black output. It has now been working without problem, daily, for over a week. Clearly if it's a Magenta only problem, the cleaning as described above would be a bit different, as the magenta is one of 4 colour cartridges.
My printer does quite a lot of work, and was bought at least a couple of years ago, being used daily for alpha numeric and photo printing work. This was the first difficulty I experienced with it.
Hope the above might help.Ken

If your color improved slightly when running the printhead option then doing more should help get better results. Sometime the printheads get really dirty/clogged and running the cleaning option more then once is needed.

If you get a slight line running across the page (from left to right) usually the indicates dust build up on the printhead or ink carriage. The dust acts as a paint brush being dragged across your paper as the carriage moves across the page during printing. You can clean the bottom of the carriage with a Q-tip or purchase some cleaning paper for your printer.

Printing is way to light

if your prints are coming out with blue green tint, more than likely, the magenta (pink) is missing from your calibration page. Print out a calibration sheet, you should have black, yellow, blue, and magenta. If one of these colors is missing, your printhead is clogged. You need a new one. Call Kodak Tech Support.

I think your printer is running out of ink. HP have their own toolkit which is a software programme which comes with printers on a disc. You have to download it off the disc then go to printers, Go to control panel select printers, highlight your printer left click go to properties and you should have an option for toolkit which allows you to clean cartridge head, align cartridge, check ink levels etc.Hope this helps.

Deteriorating Print Quality

This is Maltesecross. Turns out that the faintness of my printed pages was in fact due to a low ink cartridge, even though some pages printed out fine and others half-good. Eventually, all pages turned faint, and upon re-installing the driver, I got a low-ink warning (the first one ever). Putting in a new ink cartridge solved the problem for me.
