When playing a dvd the color randomly darkens and then brightens

When playing a DVD or BlueRay DVD the color randomly darkens/dulls and then after about 30 seconds goes back to the correct bright colors. it was working well for about 2 years. All the electronics are the same. 50 inch panasonic plasma (720p 1020i); Denon receiver, Direct TV, Componet cables (connections are secure). I've changed a bunch of "visual" settings on the PS3 and on the TV but...no luck. I even reset the PS3 to the original settings and downloaded the latest updates. Any detailed fixes would be appreciated! Thanks!

If I had to guess I would say its the back light on the TV dying, pay close attention to if it is doing at other times and not just during DVD / Blue ray usage. If it is just during the DVD/ Blue ray usage then it could be either the Blueray drive, the video cable going bad, or the video card in the PS3 going bad.
See if your PS3 is still under warrenty if it turns out to be the PS3.

If this still doesn't help your problem, please leave additional comments and I'll see what I can do.

Panasonic dmp-bdt220 causes the screen to darken and lighten

It sounds like you have the unit's analog video outputs connected to a TV/Video combo or some time of a recording device. Going through a recording device can cause the image to brighten and darken.

Is your DVD a Blueray or Just a DVD.
You can play a DVD on a blueray but the blueray will not give a good performace on a DVD. So since you are playing blueray on DVD, your computer is seeing machine code while playing and sees that the code needs updating, but doesn't know what to upgrade. And you can't change the software to a blueray because it is the laser in the machine that reads what is on the disc, not windows... but the output is read by windows Media

The screen is very dull you can only just see it

Have you tried adjusting the screen's brightness? There should be two buttons with pictures of fading and brightening suns on them to adjust this.

Can Bluray be played on this DVD machine?

You can only play blue ray format on a blueray reader. Your recorder/player requires the proper laser and programing to decode large quantities of data. Your manufacturer should clearly state whether it plays blueray fomat.
